If Anderson is broken, Root could have done no more in that session. If Anderson was fit, you could ask why on earth he didn't bowl. I'm pretty sure that if Anderson was fit, he would have bowled. England will work on him at tea. Without him, it's pretty hard to see where the wickets are coming from.

I don't want to brag but I'm pretty sure I've got Andrew Caddick's autograph at the Oval in 2001. I didn't realise it was so rare!

A lot is made of having lucky places to sit or stand during cricket matches to try and somehow influence the action on the field. Around Newlands spectators from both sides are involved in this activity. I walked past one exasperated England supporter, who said: "It’s a total waste of time standing here. We’ve not taken a wicket for over an hour."

The Anderson business is interesting. England are tight-lipped about his fitness. One imagines something isn't right there. We have to hope he can bowl a decisive spell after the break.

  5. Tea - SA 225-5published at 115 overs

Close! Quinton de Kock edges the last ball of the session but it drops short of gully.

    Joe Root grimaces.

Superb session from South Africa - just the wicket of Pieter Malan lost.

England need a big final session.

  6. SA 225-5published at 114.2 overs

Dom Bess tosses it up too full and Quinton de Kock sends a square drive to the fence. Lovely shot.

Dom Bess to bowl the final over before tea.

England haven't bowled enough wicket-taking deliveries. It's going to be difficult to get five wickets after tea. You'll have 10 overs of Anderson and Broad and 20 overs from the other lads.

There is great stamina being shown by the Barmy Army - they have been chanting away for 45 minutes. De Kock is playing patiently. He and Van der Dussen are grinding away. England will have to come back with Anderson and Broad and give it a big shot after the break.

  10. SA 221-5published at 114 overs

Ben Stokes is chirping away at Rassie van der Dussen.

Can't have rated his performance in Lewis.

He now locks eyes with VDD while scratching away at the crease.

Quinton de Kock clips the last ball through mid-wicket for a single that brings up the 50 partnership. Superb effort by this pair so far.

I think Bess has bowled a little bit too full. When he tried to drag his length back, it's been a bit short.

  13. SA 219-5published at 113 overs

A maiden but not much threat from Dom Bess.

Dom Bess, absolutely covered in red ball stains all over his body, is back on.

Would England have won this by now with Moeen Ali playing?

    Minimum 33 overs remaining

Quinton de Kock punches down the ground and takes a risky single to mid-off.

But James Anderson isn't moving well and can't get down quick enough to get the throw off in time.

For a fully fit Jimmy that was a big run out chance.

    Where's the short leg?

  18. SA 218-5published at 111.3 overs

Ben Stokes is bowling back of a length to Rassie van der Dussen, who uncertainly flicks one round the corner and then just about rides the bounce to play another ball down.

And England do not have a short leg in place. Why?

  19. SA 217-5published at 111 overs

Eng need five wickets to win

Joe Root gives Rassie van der Dussen the single to get the left-handed Quinton de Kock back on strike.

But De Kock calmly blocks out the rest of the over.

A little bit. England will now be thinking they need a breakthrough here. They don't want to be getting five wickets in a session.
