So it will be intriguing to see what XI England go with for the second T20 in Durban.

That match takes place on Friday, with a 16:00 GMT start.

Morgan tells Sky Sports that England will play their strongest sides in the next two T20 matches to give players clarity about their batting positions as they build towards the World Cup.

I still feel like there could be a fair few tweaks from this team to the one that plays in the first match of the T20 World Cup.

Could be some bolters too with strong T20 Blast, The Hundred and IPL campaigns.

More from Morgan on Sky Sports: "The wickets will be very different in Australia at the World Cup. We can't sit back and say these games don't matter - they really do. By winning these games it gives you confidence - you know how to win in any situation and that's important in a World Cup.

"We've nine more games between now and the start of the World Cup so getting guys in the positions where they might bat in October is important. It can be tough if you're not in a position you're used to.

"We want to be better prepared going into this World Cup in Australia than we were in India in 2016. Even though we lost the final we went in with a bit of an afterthought about how to play it.

"We were a five or six out of 10 with the ball tonight. Our lengths were sliding on so we were bowling fuller than we thought and it took our bowlers longer to adjust than normal."

England captain Eoin Morgan, on Sky Sports: "We definitely could've got over the line. We were in a commanding position in the chase. We never looked flustered until Ngidi came on in the 18th and the last over turned the game on its head.

"We expected to win needing seven off the last. It's a great game to play in because you learn a lot about players' composure in that situation.

"We're very open and players will say if they struggled today and ask how they can improve.

"Full credit to South Africa, they clawed their way back into a game I felt we should've easily won."

Dominic: Great game and tense, close finishes like that are what makes cricket a great watch. But when a run a ball is needed, why are Morgan and Curran going for the glory finish? If Morgan takes the single and keeps strike for the last over then England win.

South Africa captain Quinton de Kock: "It was quite interesting towards the end! It was very tight but we knew that halfway through we had to keep to our basics and we could end up winning. We knew this wicket gets slow and is tough to bat on in the last five overs. We'll enjoy it tonight but the planning for the second game in the series starts tomorrow and we want to be ruthless."

  8. Man of the matchpublished at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2020

South Africa's Lungi Ngidi, who took 3-30 in four overs: "I didn't panic under pressure. One of their best batsmen was in and they seemed to be cruising the game. I was told my job was to take wickets and that's all I wanted to do."

England captain Eoin Morgan: "It was an outstanding game of cricket. Experiences like this with a World Cup round the corner is so valuable. You learn a lot about your team when put under pressure.

"We could make up more than that one run in all three departments. We didn't take advantage of a good position in the chase and South Africa came back very well, especially Lungi Ngidi.

"Hopefully we'll learn and move on to Durban.

"Our top three are three of the finest batsmen England have ever produced in white-ball cricket. Jason Roy is very easy on the eye when in full flight and has great balance at the crease, it was great to see him come off tonight.

"I'd have liked to have seen it through but I'll still continue with the method that I use and hopefully contribute to more wins."

Jon Dunn: Buttler has to drop down the order. We have six openers all capable of getting 50 from 20 balls but only he has the skill and temperament to consistently finish a game off.

  11. Postpublished at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2020

As much as it's great entertainment having Jos Buttler opening the batting and facing as many balls as possible, that defeat could show the limitations of that plan.

By having Buttler opening, England missed one of their best finishers.

Had he come in at five in that situation, would you bet against England getting over the line?

I could take a stab at explaining why Joe Denly was picked in this team.

I could not explain why he came out ahead of Ben Stokes.

It was still a no ball re Morgan, though!

Lungi Ngidi finished with figures of 4-0-30-3, including nine dot balls.

He took a lot of punishment in the third ODI but that's a superb return to form.
