Ash Gardner's big hitting kept Australia in with a faint chance, but their victory hopes departed when she did - and they were bowled out with a ball to spare.

In the end, it was the loopy leg-spin of Poonam Yadav - and some top-class wicketkeeping by Taniya Bhatia - that turned the game in India's favour.

Ultimately, India were indebted to Deepti Sharma's unbeaten 49 from 46 balls to drag them towards a competitive total of 132-4.

But things didn't go India's way in the field early on, as Smriti Mandhana painfully collided with an advertising board, while Alyssa Healy rediscovered her form with some boundaries.

I can't really argue with Alex there - as if to show that T20 isn't all about sixes off every ball, hopefully that match will have really energised interest in the tournament.

It seems a long time ago now that Shafali Verma - who, we need to keep reminding ourselves and yourselves, is still only 16 - lit up the start of the India innings, before Australia reasserted control with three quick wickets.

We've already seen some novelties in this tournament - like the front-foot no-ball called by the third umpire, and the double-bounce no-ball.

Clips will be shared around the world, people will be aware of this story, it wasn't good for Australia but from the competition's point of view, it was brilliant.

cricketingview: I love how wonderfully understated Poonam Yadav's reaction was after beating the best player in the world neck and crop with a wondrous googly. If Imran Tahir had done that he would have been on a plane by now.

This India team is not celebrating wildly like they've won the tournament. It's one game. But contrast that with Meg Lanning as she walked over for the TV interviews - she looked worried. Suddenly, Australia's wriggle room for making mistakes is much less.

In T20 cricket, momentum is key. Get one win on the board, and you find ways to win. I think if India had lost this game, they might have had a difficult tournament. Australia will be fine, I'm still backing them to make the semi-finals. England lost the first game of the 2017 World Cup, for instance.

But Harmanpreet Kaur was phenomenal, she absolutely nailed it. A big win for India.

Bhatia only missed one chance, which was the catch on the hat-trick ball. If she'd taken that, it would still be shown on the screen now. She was on fire tonight.

A perhaps unsung hero today for India was Taniya Bhatia. Fans of top-class wicketkeeping can feast their eyes on this stumping.

Australia spinner Jess Jonassen on TMS: "It's not the way we wanted to start the tournament, we lost too many wickets in clumps and didn't have an answer to Poonam Yadav. She's got quite a good wrong 'un, we allowed her to settle and she made it really difficult for us to score. If we get another chance, hopefully we'll play her much better as we weren't able to capitalise.

"No World Cup goes 100% to plan, we know we need to play good, hard and consistent cricket - unfortunately tonight it didn't come off. Hopefully we can finish with a few wins and get through the group stage.

"It's pretty incredible, there were just over 13,500 here, it's one of the biggest crowds I've played in front of at home and hopefully it's a stepping stone towards breaking that record on International Women's Day."
