For all of the criticism, this is why England like Joe Denly. And why many would love to see him do well.
He drives Jason Holder perfectly down past the non-striker for four.

Gabriel has bowled well this spell but I'd like to have seen him to come in and hit the deck to be the enforcer, but he's gone more economical.
It's an admiral effort but I don't think that's the role West Indies want him to play.

Shane Dowrich is either trying to get his steps up or he can't count to six. He goes sprinting off from his wicketekeeping after the fifth ball of Gabriel's over only to have sheepishly turn back when he realises his mistake.
There's good competition for the grumpiest fast bowler in this match. Jimmy Anderson obviously, plus Alzarri Joseph and Shannon Gabriel. Gabriel is annoyed when a rebound off the stumps gives Sibley a run.

Chris Etheridge: Sibley is doing a wonderful impression of @GeoffreyBoycott at the moment. And it is very refreshing to see @englandcricket grind themselves out of a pickle rather than get out playing big shots.
Sibley 41, Denly 10
Another maiden from the intelligent Holder. Denly fails to get the ball away off his hip again.
Anyone?
Jason Holder is back for another spell.

Nine caps. Good haul last season. Is anyone at North Nibley CC missing their club cap?
John in Nibley.

The same thing crossed my mind in the morning session when Sibley was facing the spinner Chase. Root would have gone back and knocked a single into the leg side. Sibley kept patting the ball back down the pitch.
Denly gets two here but it's an inside edge perilously close to his stumps.

Billy Joe: The problem with England's batting is the rotation of strike Root is very good at taking singles and taking the pressure off himself. But the likes of Denly and Crawley get stuck in the crease and always have the bowlers bowling six deliveries in a row at them, creating pressure.

Right on cue Dom Sibley blocks out a maiden from Roach. The West Indies bowler gives very little to hit.
It is still strange seeing cricket played in this bio-secure environment. Roach wanders down to his fielding position in the deep and there's not another person within 30 yards.

I think players from both teams have done pretty well given the lack of atmosphere. The only applause you hear is from the middle or from the dressing room. But otherwise there's nothing.

Sibley must have heard those of you complaining about his strike-rate at lunch. He's been rattling along since.
This Test has just got me out of carrying the weekly shop up to our fourth-floor flat without a lift. An absolute bonus. Not sure my girlfriend needed any more reason to dislike cricket but she does now.

Someone must have taken notice of my frustration with the drone. No sign of it since lunch.
Despite the sunshine, West Indies are keeping the subs busy by asking for jumpers. Gabriel to Denly should be a good battle. Add two wickets to this score and England would be in trouble.
Quite right, Matthew.
Shannon Gabriel is on for a burst but is yet to limber himself up to full speed. Sibley chops down on a wide ball that goes for three more.

Matthew: I once discovered, to my horror, that my bag contained two identical boxes - one my own, the other was not. Unable to tell them apart, I couldn't risk using the wrong one so threw them both away and had to buy a new one.

The plan from West Indies to Denly is clear. Get the ball to move back into his pads or stumps like in the first innings (below).
There's half an appeal after one hits Denly's pad but replays show it would have gone over.

He played that well. It bounced more than he expected and he just rode the bounce.

Nice from Sibley, guiding the ball down to the third man boundary. The newly slimmed-down batsman is going well after lunch.
Don't think this is quite how Geoffrey would have played his first ball of a session...
Sibley 34, Denly 5
I'm not sure I want to have to go on a journey to a bar. I just want a drink not a mystical tour.
Sibley gets another quick single to Shannon Gabriel to mid-on. I wonder if this is a deliberate move from the opener or just Gabriel still thinking about his lunch.
