It has got a little bit lighter again but there's still mizzle in the air and there's no sign of any groundstaff yet.

Chances of any play imminently are very slim.

  3. What is the latest?published at 13:25 British Summer Time 15 August 2020

The update is there's no update I'm afraid...

It's got a little bit lighter but there's still drizzle in the air, the covers are still firmly in place and the players, officials and everyone concerned are taking lunch.

There's no sign of play any time soon.

  4. Bye for nowpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 15 August 2020

With the players back in their hotel rooms and no sign of play any time soon, we're going to park this live for the time being. We'll be back with any updates as and when they drop and you'll still be able to listen to TMS at the top of the page.

While we're gone have a go at the quiz below or follow the Bob Willis Trophy over here.

Jonny Bairstow is batting for Yorkshire while Haseeb Hameed is in against his former county Lancashire.

We'll hopefully speak to you soon.

    David has spoken every one.

Here are the results from our mini pink ball yes/no poll.

We'll get Matt to give these results to Andy Zaltzman to take to the ICC.

David Hall: Having watched the West Indies v England at Edgbaston with a pink ball, this whole debate needs to stop. Fans can’t see it so it’s pointless having any play at all.

Perhaps someone (ideally the ICC) could explain the issue here in simple terms. Almost every other televised outdoor sport is played in 'bad light' or at night without any problems. Get a venue with adequate floodlights, and use a ball that players and fans can see. What am I missing here?

Looking at the longer range forecast for Southampton is it worth looking at an alternative venue for the 3rd Test? With no other cricket on at the moment, all attention on this series and if it finishes 1-0 with 2 rain/light destroyed games, it will look farcical.

    No thank you, Adam.

Spider Cam is great if you're a spectator at home - it gives you some beautiful shots.

But at the ground it is so annoying. You're trying to watch the game and all you can see out of the corner of your eye is that zooming around.

I've had a look on a well known online shopping website and light meters can be bought for around £30. I'm genuinely tempted.

I'd say it has got a bit brighter here but there's no sign of any officials.

England batsman Ollie Pope on what might be a good total: "It's hard to tell until both teams have batted. It's definitely not a minefield and if we get can players in hopefully we can get 300-plus. If we're going to win this Test we're probably going to have to do it batting once."

John Matthews: Vaughan is over complicating the pink ball idea. Once you swap to a pink ball you don't change it back until a new ball is due.

There is too much talk of the pink ball doing too much. I have covered a number of games in Adelaide and it didn't. Can you tell me the pink ball would have done more this week? The red Duke ball has done plenty in this match.

When Rizwan was playing so well just before they went off yesterday the umpires could have said to him 'our judgement is it's too dark, what does your judgement say?'

    Let's do a mini poll.

Thumbs up for the pink ball being used (only for the entire Test, not being brought in and out) and thumbs down if you're not a fan.

If you know the forecast is gloomy for the week why not just say 'ok we will play with a pink ball this week'? the main thing is that we get play. We should have had another 30 overs yesterday - no question.

The TMS team had a lengthy debate in the hotel bar last night, trying to come up with a way to solve these issues with bad light in cricket.

There were lots of ideas. I volunteer Andy Zaltzman to take them to the ICC as our spokesperson.

If you are going to go to the pink ball you have got to use it all the time. I feel sorry for the umpires because they are dealing with ICC protocol.
