    Somerset 119-4 v Essex - stumps

Right, that's your lot for today.

Myself and Lord's based Adam Williams will be back tomorrow morning. Prospects of play are much better.

    See you then.

    Somerset 119-4 v Essex - stumps

Eddie Byrom was the star man for Somerset in really tough conditions.

The 23-year-old played fluently before lunch but then had to battle in between the showers to reach 51 not out.

Steven Davies also dug in to reach stumps on 13.

Essex's three seamers - Jamie Porter, Sam Cook and Aaron Beard - were impressive but will probably have wanted a couple more wickets.

    Somerset 119-4 v Essex

    And that's stumps...

With just 30 minutes to go until the scheduled close and the rain still falling, the umpires decide to call a halt to day one.

A frustrating day with a fair few rain delays, but the forecast is better for the rest of the week.

Tomorrow's forecast is looking much drier thankfully.

Fingers crossed we get a full day's play in.

Well, they got another 10 minutes in...

The rain sweeps over Lord's once more and off they go. That could well be it for the day.

Eddie Byrom drives Sam Cook beautifully down the ground for four to bring up his half-century.

The left-hander took 82 balls to get there with nine boundaries.

Such a crucial innings from the 23-year-old in tough batting conditions.

  7. Where's that blue sky gone again?published at 17:14 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

    Somerset 114-4 v Essex

    Adam Williams
    BBC Sport at Lord's

    Typical.

While the players were warming-up to come back out again, there was plenty of blue sky above.

Within 10 minutes, that's completely vanished to be replaced by thick dark clouds again.

It's probably now the darkest it's been all day.

  8. Somerset 114-4published at 17:13 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

    Byrom 46, Davies 13

The floodlights are now beaming brightly at Lord's... the natural light isn't great.

Three runs come off Jamie Porter's latest over including a couple more to Steven Davies.

Eddie Byrom is four away from a really gutsy half-century.

  9. Somerset 111-4published at 17:09 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

    Byrom 45, Davies 11

Steven Davies squirts Sam Cook behind point and down to the third man boundary. A bit streaky from the Somerset wicketkeeper but he'll pocket the runs happily.

    Four off the over.

  10. Play resumespublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

    Somerset 107-4 v Essex

Jamie Porter gets things restarted for Essex... Eddie Byrom drives his first ball but straight to the fielder.

That's the end of the over that was interrupted by the rain.

Somerset 107-4 v Essex - play to restart at 17:05 BST

Adam Williams reports that there's some blue sky above Lord's now.

Maybe we will get a touch more cricket in after all!

    Restart in 10 minutes.

  12. 17:05 BST restartpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

    Somerset 107-4 v Essex - rain delay

Yep, they're planning to get under way again in 20 minutes.

It'll be touch and go as to whether those heavy showers on the fringes of London arrive before then...

  13. Any more play?published at 16:44 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

    Somerset 107-4 v Essex - rain delay

    Adam Williams
    BBC Sport at Lord's

Here come the umpires to do the mandatory "hold an umbrella in your hand and occasionally prod the spikey bit of it in the ground" routine.

Never understand what that actually tells them.

I imagine we'll be told shortly if we may or may not get any more play in.

That latest band of rain has just about swept through Lord's and the ground staff are beginning to sweep the rain off the covers.

But there's another line of showers approaching London... these ones are 'close of play' rain showers.

  15. A year is a long time in cricket for Jack Leach...published at 16:16 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

The last 12 months have been eventful for Somerset and England spinner Jack Leach, but most definitely not in the way he would've imagined after playing his part in the heroics of the Headingley Ashes Test match of August 2019.

BBC Sport's Stephan Shemilt caught up with the slow left-armer to find out why the time since has had its on and off-field challenges.

From Stokes' sidekick to a summer without a game

Jack Leach, England's cult hero last year, on how The Office and takeaway pizza saved him during 10 long weeks in the bio-bubble.

If you were listening and watching our coverage from BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra earlier, you may have heard one of the commentary team having a chat off-mic with the players between balls.

It was former Essex and now Sussex all-rounder Ravi Bopara taking the chance to chat with old team-mate Jamie Porter shortly after he claimed the wicket of George Bartlett.

Wonder what trade secrets they were sharing with each other?
