Having declared on 560-7 with a lead of 468, Surrey were looking to make inroads into the Hampshire attack before lunch.
They did, mainly thanks to Kemar Roach who dropped into a beautiful line and length immediately.
Ian Holland (18) was lbw to a ball that nipped back. Sam Northeast (0) drove at a fullish delivery and was caught in the slips. And Tom Alsop (6) edged a defensive shot also to slip.
Earlier 19-year-old Scott Currie (4-109) picked up his best figures in only his second first-class game. His spell this morning of 3-16 promises much.
Hashim Amla, on 215 overnight, didn't bat today having suffered a stiff neck overnight.
The only thing in doubt now is whether we finish today or early tomorrow

Weather permitting there is a belting match brewing at Taunton where Middlesex lead by 100 runs in their second innings at lunch on day three.
Both first innings were dogs by dropped catches and should either side prove more prolific in grasping opportunities passed their way way then a second dig scramble could be on the cards.
Steven Finn, who was not selected for first-class cricket last summer by the visitors, claimed his first five wicket haul all since 2019 to take his tally in three innings to 11 this summer as the hosts lost six for 80 this morning.
It's a pitch for the quick seamers and Tom Helm and Finn carried the most threat for Middlesex much as Craig Overton did first up - his one completed over before lunch today looking lively again. Jack Brookes has replaced Lewis Gregory in the match as a covid sub and if he can find his feet quickly the pair will have high hopes in cloudy conditions of getting about their visitors and perhaps recreating the 285 run chase they completed at Lord's in the first round.

Simon Harmer’s three wickets in the second hour has thrown this game open after Daryl Mitchell and Jake Libby had looked comfortable in adding 111.
As was the case last week against Nottinghamshire it was a different story for Worcestershire once their reliable opening pair were separated. Libby will regret his unwise cut shot which opened the door to Harmer who then removed Mitchell and out of form Gareth Roderick in the space of three balls.
With little on offer for the seamers except occasional low bounce It looks as though Worcestershire face a five session battle with Harmer as they bid to save this match.
Surrey 560-7 dec v Hants 92 & 51-4
We won't be too far away from a result in south London either.
Hampshire trail Surrey by a mammoth 417 with six wickets in hand.
Notts (256 & 318) beat Derbys (105 & 159) by 310 runs
Notts win a first-class game for the first time in almost three years!
Liam Patterson-White finishes things by bowling Ben Aitchison for 50.
That's a big weight off the shoulders of the Notts players.
Derbys 154-9 (target 470) v Notts
It's not going to affect the result, but this has been some innings from Ben Aitchison.
The Derbyshire man goes to a maiden first-class fifty off just 48 balls, an innings that's contained three sixes.
Bess lbw b Sanderson 32 (Yorkshire 206 & 145-7 v Northants 234)
Another wicket late in the session!
Ben Sanderson has his second of the innings, trapping England's Dom Bess.
That'll be lunch too.
Somerset 268 v Middlesex 357 & 11-0
A bit of rain has arrived and so they go off for lunch.
Durham 391-9 dec v Warwickshire 87 & 7-1
Another good session for Durham as they continue to dominate the Bears.
Conners c Paterson b Broad 4 (Derbys 153-9, target 470 v Notts)
Ben Aitchison biffed three sixes off spinner Liam Patterson-White in the previous over, but it's back to business in the next as Stuart Broad gets Sam Conners caught at fine leg.
It's a stunning grab from Dane Paterson with one hand!
Broad has 4-37.
Sussex 328 & 37-3 v Lancashire 230
And it's lunch in Brighton after a morning session edged by Lancashire.
The visitors added some crucial runs with the bat before taking three quick wickets with the ball and now have a fighting chance in this fixture.
Durham 391-9 dec v Warwickshire 87 & 7-1
Warwickshire's miserable match at Chester-le-Street is continuing.

That's four wickets in the match for the England paceman.
Surrey 560-7 dec v Hants 92 & 44-4
Another Kemar Roach over and another wicket for the Barbadian.
This time Tom Alsop edges behind for six. Roach has figures of 3-16 off eight overs.
Hampshire need 424 runs just to make Surrey bat again!
Derbys 141-8 (target 470) v Notts
Derbyshire are going down swinging.
Ben Aitchison swats Liam Patterson-White for four and follows it up with a six down the ground.
He's up to 37 with lunch just around the corner.
Surrey 560-7 dec v Hants 92 & 43-3
A double-wicket-maiden over for West Indies international Kemar Roach.
First the 32-year-old traps Ian Holland for 18 before he has Sam Northeast caught for a duck three balls later.
Surrey's bowlers backing up their batsman. This game could be over very quickly.
Worcs 135-3 v Essex 561-8 dec
Simon Harmer's three wickets before lunch have put Essex in the driving seat.
Big rebuilding job for the Pears in the afternoon session.
Sussex 328 & 37-3 v Lancashire 230

Sussex are desperately trying to survive until lunch.
