Summary

  • Group 1: Durham v Essex; Warks v Notts; Worcs v Derbys

  • Group 2: Leics v Middlesex; Surrey v Glos

  • Group 3: Lancs v Yorks; Sussex v Northants

  1. Sussex recoverpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Sussex 124-8 v Northants

Sussex were in real trouble at 67-8 but Jack Carson (26 not out) and Henry Crocombe (22 not out) have put on more than fifty for the ninth wicket to guide them to a more respectable total.

  2. Slow going at Leicesterpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Middlesex 107-3 v Leicestershire

It's been slow and steady progress at Leicester.

Australia international Peter Hanscomb has moved to 15 not out, while Robbie White is on six from 30 balls.

White came to the crease following the dismissal of Stevie Eskinazi for 38.

  3. First first-class fifty for Pepperpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Essex 131-4 v Durham

Michael Pepper is going along really nicely and holding the innings together here for Essex, who are on 131-4.

Pepper has 64 from 114 balls, including 10 boundaries, while Ryan ten Doeschate is with him on five.

Since our last update, Paul Walter was bowled by Ben Raine for 28.

  4. Gloucestershire fight backpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Surrey 125-3 v Gloucestershire

Having reached 105-1 in fairly serene fashion, Gloucestershire have taken a couple of wickets to stem the Surrey flow of runs.

First Ryan Patel departs for 62, before Jamie Smith falls for just two.

David Payne has taken both wickets for figures of 2-30.

Laurie Evans joins Hashim Amla at the crease.

  5. Haynes past 50 at Worcesterpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Worcestershire 135-4 v Notts

Jack Haynes has completed his fourth first-class half-century.

He is still some way off his dad Gavin, who went past 50 in first-class cricket 27 times in the 1990s for Worcestershire.

But Haynes Jr is at least helping the Pears pile up something looking a little more like a defendable score at New Road.

Accompanied now by Brett D'Oliveira, he has moved on to 54, although he did lose Ross Whiteley for 22, a first wicket of the day for Zimbabwean Dustin Melton.

  6. Tykes show some fightpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Yorkshire 68-7 v Lancashire

Yorkshire's pre-prandial revival is lasting into the afternoon session.

Skipper Steven Patterson never gives away his wicket easily - especially not in a game of this magnitude. And he is defying a variety of home tactics to wheedle him out. Including one on the helmet from Saqib Mahmood.

Meanwhile, youngster Harry Duke is batting well and has moved on to 27. The pair have so far put on 30, comfortably the best partnership of the innings.

  7. Gubbins falls for 21published at 14:09 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Middlesex 87-2 v Leicestershire

There's also been a wicket early in the afternoon session at Leicester, where Nick Gubbins has gone for 21.

Captain Peter Hanscomb has joined Stevie Eskinazi - now 38 not out - in the middle.

  8. Sussex now eight downpublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Sussex 90-8 v Northants

Another wicket has fallen at Hove, where George Garton has been dismissed lbw by Ben Sanderson (4-31) for 12.

But Jack Carson (14 not out) and Henry Crocombe (nine not out) are at least edging Sussex towards 100.

  9. Fifty stand for Haynes & Whiteleypublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Worcestershire 115-3 v Nottinghamshire

Jack Haynes and Derbyshire old boy Ross Whiteley are leading a little recovery for Worcestershire at New Road.

From 62-3, they have shared a fifty partnership.

Haynes' own 50 looks set to follow.

For Whiteley, on his first red-ball appearance since July 2019, that would be lovely.

For now, he is on 22. Haynes is on 48.

  10. Early afternoon wicket for Nottspublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Warwickshire 83-2 v Nottinghamshire

A half-century for Warwickshire skipper Will Rhodes but a second wicket for the day for Nottinghamshire - for opposing captain Steven Mullaney.

He gets through Pieter Malan's defences to earn an lbw decision for 17.

Rhodes beds in again for the afternoon session on 54.

  11. 'Lancashire emphatically dominant'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Yorkshire 57-7 v Lancashire

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire

After 617 days since supporters were last inside Emirates Old Trafford, upwards of 2,000 were expected today and for the home supporters they weren’t disappointed.

Lancashire memorabilia - including shirts, hats and reusable plastic beer cups - have been in full view all morning and what a morning for the Red Rose side of the Pennines.

Set up brilliantly by Saqib Mahmood, whose opening spell was fast and hostile, with his new ball partner Tom Bailey at his usual accurate and consistent best.

Only Tom Kohler-Cadmore, with a stubborn 10 from 35 balls, and latterly towards the end of the session, teenager Harry Duke, have offered any resistance.

Lancashire have emphatically dominated the opening session of this game.

  12. 'Excellent bowling & poor shots'published at 13:35 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Sussex 67-7 v Northants

Not the morning Sussex would have hoped for in front of spectators for the first time in 609 days at Hove.

Having decided to bat a mixture of excellent bowling and some poor shots have contributed to Sussex being in dire straits at lunch on what looks a good pitch.

  13. 'Batting last should be a challenge'published at 13:29 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Middlesex 73-1 v Leicestershire

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Middlesex recorded their first fifty partnership of the season for the opening wicket after an obvious decision to bat first at Grace Road.

There was swing, seam but crucially spin on the first morning so batting last should be a challenge, and the visitors have picked both their young spinners - Thilan Walallawita and Luke Hollman - as a result.

Indeed it was Leicestershire's left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson that claimed the only wicket as Sam Robson missed a ball that went straight on trapping him lbw.

Steven Eskinazi, who captained the side for the first two games of the season before being dropped, has batted solidly on his return, while the in-form Nick Gubbins was lucky to survive an edge in between the keeper and slip from a ball that seamed across him from former Middlesex man Chris Wright.

  14. 'Glos would love to see back of Amla'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Surrey 77-1 v Gloucestershire

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London

A good toss for Surrey to win on a pitch which will turn later in the game. Ryan Patel and Mark Stoneman looked solid against a Gloucestershire attack that has caused every team in the group problems this summer.

Ryan Higgins trapped Stoneman for 22 but Patel looked assured in his first Championship appearance of the season.

Gloucestershire will feel they bowled tightly but would love to see the back of Hashim Amla quickly after lunch.

  15. 'An action-packed first session'published at 13:18 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Worcestershire 98-3 v Derbyshire

    Dan Wheeler
    BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester

A fluctuating and action-packed first session that sees both sides reach lunch feeling they've had a decent morning.

Worcestershire's decision to bat first was always going to be a damage limitation exercise early on and so it proved with Sam Conners producing a lovely first spell.

He pinned Daryl Mitchell in front with the first ball of the match and then was let down by Leus du Plooy twice at slip as Jake Libby and Tom Fell were grassed.

Fell didn't capitalise tickling one behind off Conners two balls later but Libby again looked a billion dollars in getting to 26 before he was run out backing-up after Matt Critchley threw down the stumps following fatal hesitation from Jack Haynes.

To his credit 20-year-old Haynes hasn't let that get him down, unfurling some glamorous shots in getting to 41 at lunch.

  17. Oh what a wonderful morningpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 27 May 2021

    Yorkshire 57-7 v Lancashire

Just three points separated Group Three leaders Lancashire from second-placed Yorkshire when the Roses Match got under way this morning.

Yorkshire won the toss, opted to bat and, even without the injured Gary Ballance, as well as three more of their England batsmen Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan, the Tykes appeared to have every reason for confidence. This is, after all, a Roses Match.

But what has happened since has been almost unbelievable.

Seven wickets have gone down. Two each for Tom Bailey and Yorkshireman Luke Wood, One each for Saqib Mahmood and Danny Lamb. and a nightmare run-out.

Bad batting or good bowling? Probably mostly the latter.

But teenage wicketkeeper Harry Duke has stopped the rot by hitting five boundaries in his 24, so there is a silver lining among the clouds for Yorkshire - and there is still a long way to go in this game.

And Good Morning to you too, Kevin Howells.

    Thompson c Jennings b Wood 10 (Yorkshire 40-7 v Lancashire)

Lancashire take their seventh wicket of the morning.

After lasting eight overs and almost doubling the score from 21-6, Yorkshire's Jordan Thompson is the latest to go.

Yorkshire-born Luke Wood finds an edge to pick up his second wicket.

That brings skipper Steve Patterson to the crease, to join young Harry Duke, who is still on 9.
