  1. Notts progress on 'low key' morningpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Somerset v Nottinghamshire 90-2

A curiously low key morning session considering the importance of this game for both sides as the County Championship builds towards its climax.

Some probing seam bowling, from Josh Davey (pictured above) especially, but Sam Northeast and Joe Clarke have been making largely untroubled progress for Notts.

There was some swing and seam movement for Somerset's depleted seam attack, although both of the wickets were gifted rather than grasped.

Pitch looks easy-paced, with little sign yet of any turn for Somerset's three spinners to work with.

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 60-2

Terrific start to the session for Hampshire!

Kyle Abbott strikes with the first ball after lunch to remove the man of the morning, George Hill.

He struggles to get forward enough to one that look like it nipped back in and kept a touch low.

Umpire James Middlebrook raises his finger for the second time today.

Gary Ballance the new man at the crease for Yorkshire.

Nathan Barkley: Miles better format. Maybe because my teams in Division 1. If you're moaning about div 2 & 3 having nothing to play for then your team needs to try harder!

Shaun Berkeley: Now that three divisions have been established keep the format & have three up, three down which would virtually eliminate dead games.

Ollie Randall: With four games to go, surely in a Division format, it's unlikely that more than six would ever be in the running by this stage anyway? And likewise, there would be several Div 2 games with little to play for. The conference format doesn't make this noticeably worse.

  6. 'No excuses for Glamorgan' against Snater's four-wicket burstpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

Division Two: Glamorgan 59-6 v Essex

    Nick Webb
BBC Radio Wales at Sofia Gardens

Essex’s Netherlands seamer Shane Snater ripped Glamorgan’s top order apart with 4-14 in the first session in Cardiff.

He reaped the virtues of consistent line and length, twice taking two wickets in an over, as Glamorgan’s batsmen struggled badly with their return to red-ball cricket.

New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford, making his Championship debut for Glamorgan, watched the chaos at the other end before he was caught off bat and pad at short-leg off Simon Harmer for 31 against one of his former counties.

Despite cloudy skies, Glamorgan can have no excuses for their plight after choosing to bat first.

  7. Middlesex settle nerves after poor startpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

Division Three: Middlesex 85-4 v Derbyshire

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London at Lord's

What appeared an odd decision to bat first under cloudy skies at Lord's, seemed a horrendous error in judgement for Middlesex at 14-3 but a mini recovery has settled the nerves.

Luis Reece, nicknames Louie, was the king of the swingers this morning alongside Sam Conners as they bagged the four wickets - the latter snaring Mark Stoneman for a duck on debut after his move from Surrey.

Robbie White (38 not out) has batted with masterful patience and both Max Holden (13) and Martin Andersson, who remains not out on 19 with him, have averted a collapse synonymous with the hosts in recent seasons.

The only four real appeals for dismissals have resulted in wickets this morning and with that begs the question were the hosts correct to bat despite the overheads?

We shall have to wait until both have batted though to truly know.

  10. Lunch at Ageas Bowlpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 60-1

Some real grit and determination shown by Yorkshire's batsmen.

They lose just the one wicket in the morning session after being put in by Hampshire.

George Hill battles to 31 not out off 101 balls and Tom Kohler-Cadmore 13 off 56 after the earlier loss of Adam Lyth for six.

Real attritional stuff being well appreciated by those in the crowd.

  11. Lunch at Old Traffordpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Lancashire v Warwickshire 77-2

Honours just about even at Old Trafford after a very competitive session of Championship cricket.

Lancashire won the first part of the morning as Tom Bailey removed Rob Yates and discarded England opener Dom Sibley.

But from 7-2, Chris Benjamin on Championship debut and Sam Hain have put on 70 to give more credence to Will Rhodes' decision to bat first.

  12. Lunch at Tauntonpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Somerset v Nottinghamshire 88-2

After being asked to bat by Somerset captain Tom Abell, Nottinghamshire will be the happier going into the lunch break.

They would have been in an even better position if Ben Slater and Ben Duckett had not carelessly got out to Jack Brooks.

But Sam Northeast has looked good, making his way to not out in his first Notts innings, and he has found good support from Joe Clarke, which they will look to continue this afternoon.

  13. Touch of rust for Leachpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Somerset v Nottinghamshire 83-2

A quarter of an hour until the lunch break and Jack Leach is introduced into the home attack.

This is Leach's first bowl since 25 July, which seems absurd, but that is another argument. An early sign of rust as he bowls a no-ball and then a long hop, which is crashed for four by Joe Clarke

  14. Postpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Lancashire v Warwickshire 63-2

First sign of spin of the morning as Matt Parkinson is thrown the ball. With 24 wickets this at just under 20, Parkinson is a canny operator with his leggies, and just a single comes from his first six balls.

Some notable wicket news to bring you from Division Three.

Zak Crawley's return to the Kent side does see him make a half-century against Leicestershire but a ball later, he has to depart.

An ugly-looking attempted pull shot off Foxes slow left-armer Callum Parkinson sees him miss the ball and his stumps rearranged.

Crawley had reached 50 off 68 balls with nine fours earlier in the over.

  16. Northeast steadying the shippublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Somerset v Nottinghamshire 64-2

Three maidens in a row for Somerset to put a squeeze on the visitors' scoring, before Sam Northeast is gifted a ball on his legs for an easy boundary. Fourth four in his debut innings for Notts, who will hope he doesn't gift his wicket away like the two Bens, Slater and Duckett.

  17. Hill remains patientpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 39-1

George Hill continuing his dogged performance of the morning at the top of Yorkshire's order.

He moves on to 20 from 67 balls with a lovely back foot drive for four through point off Brad Wheal and then manages to get a fortunate four more as he tries to pull out of a shot but guides it along the ground to the third man rope.

Hampshire still with just the one wicket so far of Adam Lyth to Kyle Abbott.

  18. Four-day king or franchise expert?published at 12:22 British Summer Time 30 August 2021

    Lancashire v Warwickshire 59-2

Kevin Howells on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra at Old Trafford is sparking an interesting debate about how cricketers still want to crack Test cricket and the four-day game above all and that the modern trend of T20 franchise cricketers will have a tinge of disappointment they have not cracked it in the game's oldest format.

Which would you prefer? A better bank balance or more of a legacy in Test or county cricket? #bbccricket
