  1. NZ 87-2published at 26 overs

    Conway 44, Taylor 2

Williamson almost middled the ball down into the ground before it bounced onto off stump. Really odd.

Ross Taylor is the new batsman. He's good.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

He was playing very late and trying to run it down on the off side, but he played a bit too late... England have got a big wicket.

That is a breakthrough that England desperately wanted after lunch. It was a rather innocuous ball. It went into the ground flicked the off bail.

    Williamson b Anderson 13 (NZ 86-2)

Anderson gets Williamson! A big, big moment as New Zealand's skipper is out to his first ball after lunch.

It's an odd dismissal - Williamson playing a straightforward ball late but deflecting it down onto his stumps.

England don't care. Jimmy is delighted.

  5. NZ 86-1published at 25.3 overs

Conway nabs a single to get the scoreboard ticking over.

  6. NZ 85-1published at 25 overs

I see players wandering back out to the middle.

Will England miss a spinner in this afternoon session? They'll want wickets to halt New Zealand's progress.

It looks like it'll be James Anderson to bowl.

I'll try to put some meat on the bones of England's selection.

Without Ben Stokes (and Chris Woakes and Sam Curran) there was no option to have a bowler in the top seven of the batting line-up.

Once Stuart Broad was named vice-captain, that was one of the four bowling spots taken. One of Ollie Robinson or Craig Overton was always likely to bat at eight, so we're down to two.

It would have been a very big call to omit James Anderson, leaving one spot for either extra pace or spin. England have gone for the former.

I tucked up Joe Root (aged 17) third ball of the innings, caught short leg. He left the field, threw off his pads and cried in the centre circle of the adjacent football field for 30 minutes.

I dismissed Ben Duckett when he was at school. I was hungover and had thrown up on the way to the ground. He had scored a double hundred the day before. I got him to a peach that moved across him and was caught at first slip. Haven't stopped going on about it since

The last time England went into a home Test without a specialist spinner was the 2012 Headingley match against South Africa, when Graeme Swann was left out. That match is famous for Kevin Pietersen's incredible century and his post-match comments of "it's tough being me" in the England dressing room.

I'm not sure you've got the hang of this 'I dismissed an England cricketer' theme, Joe. You didn't dismiss Rhodes, and he's not an England player.

I caught Will Rhodes at extra cover some 10 years ago when playing a school cricket match in Yorkshire. He opened and scored a century off seven overs.

New Zealand's debutant Devon Conway was in an entertaining battle with Mark Wood before the lunch break.

Wood, bowling rapid, hit the opener with a couple of nasty bouncers but Conway got a few blows of his own in.

Rob VDS: I dismissed Mark Ramprakash while I was playing for Hampshire schools, him for Middlesex. Felt very happy with myself as even at that age he had quite a reputation. The fact he'd got a big hundred by the time I had him caught on the boundary is not important!
