Anderson won't enjoy this. It's not his sort of game.

James Anderson looks uncharacteristically calm after being clubbed for four by De Grandhomme.

Root follows the wicket with a horror full toss and a miserable half-tracker. Possibly one of the worst overs to take a wicket I've seen.

Rory Burns at slip had to make good ground. The ball went up in a really gentle loop. That's 38 Test wickets for Joe Root!

    Nicholls c Burns b Root 23 (NZ 159-6)

Gone! Golden arm Joe Root has a wicket, having Henry Nicholls caught at slip after the left-hander gloves a reverse sweep. The ball loops in the air but Rory Burns still has to run forward and dive to take the catch.

That's the biggest round of applause of the day. Even Rory Burns is applauding.

They're staying out for now despite the drizzle.

A poor fella in the crowd has just, while being shown on the big screen, pulled his rain jacket on backwards - cue hearty laughter from the Lord's spectators.

  16. NZ 157-5published at 50 overs

    Nicholls 22, Watling 13

Ben Foakes has been spotted in the crowd. He'd have been playing in this game if he hadn't done him hamstring.

Root is flying through these overs in an attempt to improve the over-rate. He's not thinking of us live-texters.

  17. NZ 156-5published at 49 overs

There's no sign of a declaration before lunch. Kane Williamson is still in his training kit on the dressing room balcony. I suspect New Zealand will come out for a slog for 30 minutes after the break.

Watling edges Anderson through the slips and away to the boundary. Jimmy has that wry smile on his face. He looks thoroughly unimpressed.

Nicholls comes down the pitch to Root and clubs him down the ground. I wonder how Sibley, Crawley, Lawrence and co are feeling.

I had England at about a 5% chance of winning this at the beginning of the day. I reckon that's down to about 1% now. Given they are probably going to be chasing something in excess of 280, it would take something utterly remarkable for the hosts to win. Instead, that callow batting line-up is going to face a stern examination by the skilful Black Caps this afternoon.
