  1. Eng 82-2published at 9.2 overs

Odean Smith takes a big gulp of air before banging one in short to Moeen Ali who top-edges it over his head. Two West Indies fielders and wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran converge on the boundary but the ball plonks safely into the turf.

  2. Eng 78-2published at 9.0 overs

Kieron Pollard almost ambles in, and James Vince drops his hands on a ball outside off stump and dabs it into the ground for a single to keep the strike.

England are in exactly the same position as West Indies were at this stage. We could be in for a tense finish.

  3. Eng 74-2published at 8.2 overs

Kieron Pollard, who was excellent on a used pitch yesterday, is varying his pace. Moeen Ali is able to guide one through backward point and England run three.

  4. Eng 69-2published at 8.0 overs

Romario Shepherd, a red cloth tucked into the back of his trousers, looks like a serious man on the cricket field. He is the picture of focus, running into Moeen Ali.

The England stand-in skipper drills a cover drive straight to the fielder off the fourth ball before pulling for a single a delivery later. A shake of the head as he jogs to the other end. He's seven off 14 balls at the moment, and still feeling his way into his innings.

There is a bit of cat-and-mouse going on here. He doesn't want to bowl Hosein when Moeen is at the crease, because he knows how strong he is against spin, especially left-arm spin.

Alex Thomas: This is a key innings now for James Vince… if he gets 70+ and wins us the game, he will finally show us all why he should be playing for England. But if he’s out caught for 30 again, he’s doing himself no favours!

  7. Eng 62-2published at 7.0 overs

Kieron Pollard's first ball is punched through the covers by James Vince, who continues to look the part.

A slightly more circumspect start from Moeen Ali. He was striking the ball so cleanly yesterday but has wafted at a few this evening.

This is a key phase. England prospered hugely with the ball between overs seven and 15. They need to make up a bit here, because their death bowling was again not up to scratch.

  9. Eng 56-2published at 6.0 overs

End of the powerplay. Good spot, FPL... At least it proves I'm not a bot, eh?

FPL: I hope Kraigg Braithwaite isn't reading your live text, as he'll think he's been deposed as West Indies' Test captain by his predecessor Jason Holder!

Odean Smith is bowling serious pace here. The third ball of the over was about 93mph. Quick.

  12. Eng 55-2published at 5.4 overs

Maybe one day it will just click for James Vince, and we can celebrate all that grace and elegance without the use of the word 'but...'.

He's 26 off 11 balls after picking up a couple off Odean Smith, who is all hustle and bustle. He's putting everything into these deliveries.

Vince is looking good, but we've been here before. Many times.

  14. Eng 52-2published at 5.0 overs

Eoin Morgan looks on nervously from the dressing room as Sheldon Cottrell bounds in to James Vince.

The England batter eases himself languidly on to the back foot and deftly uses the pace of the left-arm seamer to cut him for four.

Vince backs it up with another boundary off the final ball of the over.

    Lovely stuff.

What a moment that could be. It was a pretty simple chance for Holder. He should take that every time.

  16. dropped catch

Could this be a big moment in the match? Jason Holder spills a chance off Moeen Ali at slip from the bowling of Odean Smith. West Indies' Test captain was almost already celebrating the catch before actually taking it.

    Smith is incandescent with rage.

That's a great response from Odean Smith after getting his radar wrong from the first three deliveries. He went back of a length, banged it in and got his man.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 22:03 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2022

    Banton c Holder b Smith 16 (Eng 40-2)

Tom Banton miscues a pull off Odean Smith and it's well taken by Jason Holder, running back over his head.

  19. dropped catch

    Eng 40-1published at 3.2 overs

Odean Smith, back in the side after a reported rift with skipper Kieron Pollard, is thrown the ball and Tom Banton dispatches his first legal ball for six over square leg.

The ball previously Smith thought he had a caught-behind chance spilled by Nicholas Pooran, but the ball does not appear to have clipped the bat.

  20. Eng 32-1published at 3.0 overs

Left-armer Sheldon Cottrell, cogs and gears clunking away on the approach to the crease, steams in and bangs one in short. But Tom Banton picks up the length and beats the fielders at wide mid-on and mid-wicket with a pull for four.
