Mithali Raj was once again the anchor in India's innings, and this time she judged it to perfection and eventually led her side to victory.

She also become the leading women's run-scorer across the three formats.

England captain Heather Knight: "There's a bit of disappointment but it was a great game and made even better by the crowd.

"We were a few runs short, batting was hard and it was tricky to get boundaries. We need to work as a side on getting 240/250 on these slow wickets. I thought we bowled really well, we just didn't have the runs on the board.

We haven't been tested like that for a while so it was a good experience to get a tight finish.

We lost key wickets at important times and on those wickets you have more time than you think to do the basics for longer. We didn't do that today but we will learn from it."

Jemimah Rodrigues and Smriti Mandhana then fell, to leave India 81-3, and England in charge of the game.

India's reply got off to a good start with Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma taking them to 46-0, before Kate Cross - who was superb throughout the white-ball series, dismissed Verma.

  8. 'I like chasing'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

India skipper Mithali Raj: "I never give up in the middle, I knew I just needed one good partnership.

"I knew in the middle of the innings I could manage the game. We have younger players so I have to guide them, and I have to be there in the middle. As a player I like chasing because I can build an innings and take the game forward.

"I wanted to be there in the middle. You can't win games sat in the dugout. I picked the bowlers, and areas, I could score more runs, and I was guiding Sneh Rana.

"It is always good to have an all-rounder, especially a batter who can bowl. She has been phenomenal for us. I'm sure she'll play a very important role for India going forward."

Three more quick wickets left England 197-9 and their innings was petering out, and in the end probably resulted in them being at least 10 or 15 runs light.

England will look back at the way they batted today.

They were going well with Amy Jones and Nat Sciver, at 151-3, but maybe tried to accelerate a little too quickly.

They, and Katherine Brunt, all fell in quick succession to leave them 177-6.

Player of the series Sophie Ecclestone: "It was a disappointing end but getting the two wins up first was great and sets us up nicely for the T20s.

"I like knowing Heather trusts me to bowl at the important times and has faith in me.

"Mithali batted really well today, she was hard to bowl at on that pitch because it's probably more of the pitch they're used to playing on.

"It's nice playing with Sarah Glenn, not only another spinner but we're a similar age, we have the same taste in music so that's nice for me to have!"

It's the last we'll see of Mithali Raj in this series as she doesn't play T20 any more. But her job is done and she's done it very well today. Perhaps it was quite fitting that it was Raj and Jhulan Goswami who were there at the end for India, as who knows if we will see them play in England again.

I think England were 30 or 40 runs short. It was a tricky pitch, they set a good platform for a bigger total but India have kept the series alive.

The three Twenty20 games are on Friday, Sunday and Wednesday, 14 July.

Each of those games are worth two points, so England know that with one win they won't be able to lose the multi-format series.

They will need two wins to take the series outright.

Credit to Mithali Raj. I'm gutted for England but the series is still alive and I've been slating Mithali the past few games but she's done it for her team today.

What a day for Mithali Raj.

She's led her side to victory, and also became the leading women's run-scorer in international cricket.

What a game. It looked like England were in control throughout but India took the game as deep as they could. As soon as England brought cover in from the boundary, I knew Mithali Raj would get one through there because she's so strong driving off the pace bowlers.

I think that field change was a mistake.
