These really are the only England highlights I have to show you. Deflating.

  2. What you have missedpublished at 05:28 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

Just waking up? It's not good news for England fans.

After winning the toss and electing to bat England have been dismissed for 147 on the stroke of tea.

Rory Burns secured his place in Ashes history by being bowled by Mitchell Starc with the very first ball of the series.

England, who left out both Stuart Broad and James Anderson in bowler-friendly conditions, were 11-3 when Joe Root was out for a duck and 29-4 when Ben Stokes followed for five.

A stand of 52 between Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler was the only point England even threatened to come into the contest.

Pat Cummins, on his first appearance as Australia captain, took 5-38 in a dream day for the hosts.

Shortly after England were dismissed a storm arrived and the rain is still pouring down. We can play beyond 7am UK time if it stops.

It's still pelting down. If you can get yourself to sleep for a bit.

  4. Australia 'relentless'published at 05:23 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

The key to the Australian's bowling today was just how relentless they were together.

Pat Cummins has got the five and I'm sure whenever we hear from him or whoever the press speak to later they will say it was the bowling group as a unit. It was just relentless pressure. That was a sign of the series in 2019 - it was just relentless all day and that is very much what they did today.

England couldn't push back at all. That one 50-run partnership from Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope threatened to just stem the flow a little bit but as soon as that was broken it felt like inevitable.

  5. 'England will be hugely deflated'published at 05:18 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

England will be hugely deflated sat in the dressing room. You have so much expectation at the start of an Ashes series.

They haven't done the work necessarily because of the conditions but they'll have been building and revving themselves up for this moment and within the space of an hour it was all kind of done and dusted for me.

In the last 100 years it is England's sixth worst score when batting first in an opening game of a series. That is all Test cricket, not just the Ashes.

It is their worst start to an Ashes when they have batted first since 1958-59, when they were bowled out for 134 at Brisbane.

It's absolutely tipping down now. There are about 20 fluorescent security guards out there wearing transparent lightweight ponchos that are really not up to the task. One of them just posed for a photo from the crowd while getting drenched.

It looks like someone upstairs has turned on the tap above the Gabba. It's hosing it down. Puddles are forming on the outfield.

The bowlers will be sat there thinking "we really need to get on this evening" and for whatever period of time it is while the conditions are like this and it is overcast and damp, while you don't want the ball getting wet because it goes soft.

England need the ball as hard as possible for as long as possible. They need the perfect combination of grey ledden skies and a damp atmosphere but a dry outfield.

It was Pat Cummins' sixth Test five-wicket haul but his first against England.

He has an extraordinary record against England, having taken 57 wickets in 11 Tests at an average of 20.5.

He had five four-wicket hauls and seven three-wicket hauls in his previous 19 innings.

We've still got bags of overs left - we've had 50.1 overs and we can add on an hour's play. There is the prospect that if the storm blows over England might get to bowl in helpful bowling conditions with the lights on. Boy, they need a lift after the day they've had.

This rain is heavy now. There are some poor stewards getting absolutely soaked as they stand around the boundary edge protecting the playing surface.

Often in Brisbane we get a storm that will last 20-30 minutes and then it will be on its way. If we've then got 40-50 minutes to get sorted before coming back on again it might be possible.

It might work in England's advantage because they'll have a nasty little session at Australia.

The storm has arrived. It is raining at the Gabba.

If we do get back under way Ollie Robinson is going to have a lot of bowling to do.

He'll hope to perform better than he managed with the bat...

It is not raining at the moment but the groundstaff at the Gabba have a premonition for these sort of things.

We're about to get trashed by a storm - you can feel it coming. It is going to hit us pretty soon, the electric clouds are building.

I don't think it's raining yet but some of the smaller covers have been brought on. England are doing some slip catching practice with the red electronic advertising boards shining bright in the gloom.

England will have a session to bowl as long as the weather holds. There are some very angry clouds building but I've looked at the radar and it looks like any showers might slip by. You'd think if England are going to get back into this game they'll want to bowl in these conditions.

Australia have been totally dominant. It was a collective effort from the bowlers and there was some excellent catching from Australia. Will England take all of their chances? Australia did.
