Haseeb Hameed scored 25 but Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler are the only England batters to come out of the innings with anything anywhere near credit.

    From 60-5 they shared a stand of 52 - yes I'm classing a 52-run partnership as a win.

But Buttler was caught behind for 39 and Pope top-edged to fine leg for 35 and from there England crumbled once more.

It started on the very first ball when Rory Burns was bowled by Mitchell Starc...

And things didn't really improve for Joe Root's side...

Connor: That disaster is on Joe Root. From the selection of the team to choosing to bat. A shambles.

  5. Teapublished at 04:42 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

That will be tea. England will be bowling in 20 minutes, if the rain stays away.

It is a great catch and a great bit of bowling. It bounced a little bit on Chris Woakes. What a debut for Pat Cummins as captain.

England had some good balls but they will be disappointed with that. How many times do we see an England team go to Australia and start slowly and get bundled out?

That is a super catch from Josh Hazlewood!

It has been a terrific bowling performance from Australia and particularly their captain Pat Cummins.

Woakes c Hazlewood b Cummins 21 (Eng 147 all out)

Sigh. Why did anyone hope for any different? England, having won the toss and chosen to bat, are bowled out for 147 before tea on day one.

Pat Cummins takes the final wicket - Chris Woakes caught pulling to fine leg - and it gives him a five-wicket haul in his first Test as captain.

The cloud looks very threatening now.

  10. Eng 147-9published at 50 overs

    Woakes 21, Leach 2

    And so it begins...

Interestingly, Cummins has opted for Nathan Lyon to England's final pair.

It's been a dream loss of the toss for Pat Cummins.

  13. Eng 146-9published at 49 overs

This is Jack Leach's first Test since England's trip to India. He drives his third ball down the ground for a couple.

150 is England's miserable, deflating target.

If Jack Leach manages to survive until 4.40am UK time, tea will be delayed.

We've got a very dramatic looking raincloud looming at the moment, slate grey and massive like a hostile alien spaceship on its way. It may tail south and miss the ground, or it may come straight on and say hello.

  16. Postpublished at 04:32 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

Jack Leach is England's number 11. Pat Cummins is chasing a five-for.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 04:30 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

    Wood c Harris b Cummins 8 (Eng 144-9)

Another one gone. England's ninth wicket falls in utterly predictable fashion - Mark Wood fending a catch to short leg from a Pat Cummins bouncer.

    The end is nigh.

  18. Eng 143-8published at 04:26 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

A filthy cloud looks to be settling over the Gabba, bringing a darkness matched by the expression of Ben Stokes on the England bench. In the middle, Wood flays Hazlewood to deep square leg for a couple.
