  1. England's tail fails to wagpublished at 05:13 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

Chris Woakes battled his way to 16 off 47 balls to ensure Australia would at least have to bat again. He was given some support by Mark Wood who was undone by Nathan Lyon attempting to drive to make it 296-9

Woakes fell in the following over, feathering a catch to Alex Carey off Cameron Green. Jack Leach, who faced two balls, was left not out without scoring.

Australia were left needing 20 to secure victory.

  2. Robinson in reversepublished at 05:09 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

The game was probably up by this stage, but Ollie Robinson's shot selection was perhaps not the wisest given England's predicament.

A reverse sweep straight into the hands of Nathan Lyon at point left England on 286-8.

  3. Buttler counterattack endspublished at 05:05 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

As his way, Jos Buttler attempted to counter attack against the tide of Australian pressure but Josh Hazlewood with the new ball was a difficult prospect in tandem with Pat Cummins.

The England wicketkeeper played a little too far away from his body to a delivery from the former with a tentative shot to edge the ball through to Alex Carey.

It left the tourists' lower order with a lot to do.

  4. Stokes battles in vainpublished at 05:01 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

Ben Stokes began in confident fashion and he and Jos Buttler stemmed the flow of wickets to some degree.

However, after a dogged 49-ball 14 Stokes was removed by Australia captain Pat Cummins, caught at gully by Cameron Green.

Understandably, the all-rounder has looked a little rusty in this Test.

I don't think Australia would have thought for a minute they would get three wickets before the new ball. It was disappointing because the timing of everything seemed to be right for England.

  6. Pope quickly followspublished at 04:57 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

Ollie Pope has some experience of Australian pitches after a spell in club cricket but he was maybe guilty of being caught in two minds about whether to come forward or go back to spinner Nathan Lyon.

The turn and bounce surprised him and he ended up guiding a fairly straightforward catch to Steve Smith in the slips to depart for just four.

Pope's dismissal made it 234-5 and England fearing an innings defeat.

Joe Root has scored 1,544 runs this year. England's second highest run-scorer in the year is Rory Burns on 492. Root has scored 1,052 more runs than the second highest player.

Cameron Green impressed me today. The ball was reversing slightly. I think Root got done by a good piece of bowling.

  9. Root falls shortpublished at 04:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

Joe Root's search for an Ashes hundred in Australia goes on. He hung his bat out to a delivery from Cameron Green indecisively, and the ball took the edge. Meat and drink for Alex Carey behind the stumps.

Root managed to add three runs to his own total of 89 but fell short of three figures. At 229-4 England were teetering.

We came into this day with optimism and hope. I don't know whether the players were looking too far ahead at getting in a winning position. In England's discussions will have said they would have to get through the first 30 minutes. Once they lost wickets it was so hard to stop the momentum.

  11. Malan falls earlypublished at 04:46 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

England's first job was to get through to the new ball without losing any wickets but those plans were soon in tatters.

Dawid Malan, who resumed on 80, faced 17 more balls adding two runs before he became Nathan Lyon's 400th Test wicket with a relatively soft bat-pad catch for Marnus Labuschagne.

  12. How day four unfolded...published at 04:38 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

If you've just turned your phone or laptop on hoping to read about unbeaten centuries from Joe Root and Dawid Malan, I have some bad (although perhaps not entirely unexpected) news for you.

England resumed on 223-2 but were bowled out for 297 shortly before lunch. Australia then knocked off the 20 runs required for victory for the loss of just one wicket.

Let's recap how the fourth day unfolded as Australia wrapped up an emphatic nine-wicket victory in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.

Australia will think about resting Josh Hazlewood. If he has any sort of niggle he won't play in Adelaide.

There are still questions about the top order. I don't know about Harris and Warner got 94 but it was questionable.

  15. Postpublished at 04:30 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

Liam Livingstone is not even in the Lions squad so not much hope of that I'm afraid, Dave. England have also veered away from picking players for the Test side on their form in limited-overs cricket.

Barring injury, I think we'll see the same top six for Adelaide. You could make a case for Jonny Bairstow, but the bowling will get a shake-up.

Dave Taylor: Pity Livingstone isn't in the squad, his dual spin would make him a good partnership breaker, and a few balls of his batting is like a session of most people.

It is going to be tough. There is a day-nighter coming up and one at the end. Next week clearly is absolutely critical. Last time Joe Root put Australia in and England's bowlers didn't turn up. They will have to be on the money.

IZ: I think a lot of people will say for Woakes not to play in Adelaide but a pink ball Test is where he'll be most effective. Also, don't think England's batting can afford not having Woakes at 8...
