  1. 'We have to be better'

    England captain Joe Root, speaking at the post-match presentation, said: "It's frustration. We worked hard to get back in the game. We hoped to post some sort of total today. The pitch was a little uneven and cracks were appearing. but we couldn't get through that initial phase.

    "Our selection? It's easy to say with hindsight. We wanted variation in our attack, move through different gears. I thought our bowlers were excellent, but we have to be better in the field. Likewise with the bat.

    "We showed fight and character for some of the second innings and know where we have to improve."

    England have something to think about. Joe Root will know questions await him about a number of things - the selection and the toss.

    The first innings was not unexpected. England were not prepared for a Test match.

    You have to stay - a session or two on day three apart - Australia have outclassed England in all departments.

    That is about as emphatic a victory as you will see in Test cricket.

    England's lack of battle-hardness means when you get into a difficult period you have nothing to fall back on. I have empathy for how England have had to prepare and get into a battle at the same time.

    There were times England looked like you they were turning a corner but it has ended up too much to turn around.

    The first hour put England so far onto the back foot that they haven't been able to come back from it.

    Australia have done it just after lunch on the fourth day. England dared to dream yesterday but lost their way horribly this morning.

    Australia go 1-0 up in the Ashes.

    Well bowled Ollie Robinson. A crumb of comfort. He forces Alex Carey to nibble at one and the Aussie wicketkeeper promptly nicks it into the gloves of Jos Buttler.

    A run off the penultimate ball of Chris Woakes' over denies him a maiden over. Alex Carey flicks into one-day mode off the final ball, but his miscued drive dribbles to mid-on.

    Expansive from Alex Carey off Ollie Robinson as he opens himself up and drives down the ground.

    He's ran three and looking for a fourth run which gives England a chance of a run out.

    Haseeb Hameed dives to stop the ball on the boundary and Ben Stokes on the relay hammers the ball in and it just misses the stumps with Carey short of his ground.

    Half a chance of a run out as Haseeb Hameed shies at the stumps but a dive from Alex Carey at the non-striker's end and he is home.
