That's the length Anderson needs to bowl. Labuschagne's feet haven't been moving as nicely since the break because of that nagging length.

    How did that miss?!

  3. Aus 55-1published at 30 overs

This probably isn't a good time for me to tell you David Warner scored his highest Test score - 335 not out - on this ground in a day-night Test against Pakistan two years ago.

He and Marnus Labuschagne put on 361 for the second wicket in that game - a proper sickener.

Jimmy Anderson zips one close to Marnus' off stump.

If you're just waking up in the UK, good morning!

The second session has just started and David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne are continuing to dig in. Warner made his slowest start to a Test innings, Labuschagne copped one in the ribs from Ben Stokes and Joe Root has wasted two reviews already.

England have bowled well, if a bit short, restricting Australia to 45-1 after two hours' play. Marcus Harris was the only wicket to fall, thanks to a stunner from Jos Buttler.

But the big talking points came before a ball was even bowled, with Australia captain Pat Cummins ruled out after being deemed a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case while out at a restaurant last night.

That means Steve Smith returns to captaincy duties for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal in 2017.

Broad and Anderson return to England's bowling attack while Jack Leach misses out.

    Warner 29, Labuschagne 16

When I work one of these overnight Tests I'm always jealous of that initial feeling when you wake up with hope that things are going well. England fans won't be too upset on this occasion but if Warner keeps chopping boundaries like this they will be.

Just the one wicket so far for England...

  7. Aus 46-1published at 28 overs

Anderson goes up for appeals in consecutive deliveries after hitting Warner on the pad. The second was the closer call but was still going a good few inches over the top.

Having used up two reviews in the first session, England are going to have to be very careful going forward.

David Warner follows those lbw shouts with a drive for four.

    Warner 21, Labuschagne 16

Ollie Robinson spends the over banging away just below 80mph before nudging his way through that barrier as he warms up. Robinson doesn't have the most athletic of run-ups. I'd call it lumbering.

I was on social media in the break and saw an amazing photo of Jos Buttler in mid-air as he was taking that catch, like snapping a moment in time.

Here is said photo, and it is pretty spectacular.

Ollie Robinson, who looked a little stiff earlier, is going to bowl.

  11. Aus 45-1published at 26 overs

After the score crawled in the first session, you feel this one could go either way. Wickets and England are right on top but if Australia bat through unscathed then you don't need me to tell you they're be delighted.

At worst England will want to control the scoring until the floodlights and night-time element come into play in the final session.

It was quite a docile first session. England got a bit too excited with their reviews but the pink ball does bounce a little more than the red, so they'll have to bear that in mind for the rest of the innings.

  13. Aus 45-1published at 06:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

    Warner 20, Labuschagne 16

England were tidy, if a little short. Have I said that before? Warner just really dug in. It looked like he was doing everything possible not to fall to Stuart Broad again.

It's going to be Jimmy Anderson to start the session.

Totum: Just woken up - 45 runs in a session? Australia? Warner? Did they forget to take their bats out to the middle? Have we been bowling towards second slip?

Having munched on some lunch/tea/dinner, England bowlers are doing a few warm-ups on the boundary edge. Stuart Broad leads them out after the interval. This is his 150th cap.

  16. What have you missed?published at 06:32 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2021

We've had an attritional first session in the second Test in Adelaide.

Jos Buttler took a stunning catch to remove Marcus Harris for three but otherwise Australia have been digging in, reaching 45-1 at lunch.

With England bowling some tight stuff, David Warner has made his slowest start to a Test innings, Marnus Labuschagne toughed it out while Joe Root blew two reviews.

The biggest news of the day has come off the field with Australia captain Pat Cummins ruled out after being deemed a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case while out at a restaurant last night.

That means Steve Smith is captaining Australia for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal.

England have picked both Stuart Broad and James Anderson and left out Jack Leach.

Like the much-anticipated new series of your favourite TV show, it has been great to have Broad v Warner back this morning.

Broad hit the Australia opener's pad with his very first ball of the day but since then Warner has battled through.

There hasn't been much help from the pitch or pink ball for Broad.

It's almost 5pm in Adelaide. It'll start getting dark there around 9:30am UK time during the final session.

    Could be fun.

Here's more on the big news of the day.

Australia captain Pat Cummins is out of the second Ashes Test after being deemed a close contact of someone who tested positive for Covid-19.

Steve Smith is leading Australia in the day-night match with seamer Michael Neser making his debut in place of Cummins.

Cummins, who was eating in a restaurant but did not breach any biosecurity protocols, must isolate for seven days.

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc and off-spinner Nathan Lyon were eating at the same restaurant as Cummins but were at a separate table outdoors.

According to the Australian Government Department of Health,, external there are 92 active Covid-19 cases in South Australia currently, with 64 locally acquired in the last seven days.

Cummins can count himself pretty unfortunate.

It was a quiet first session. We're now in the longer, 40-minute break in this day-night Test.

Marcus Harris had one life before he was removed by the worst ball Stuart Broad bowled all morning.

Broad, in his trademark pointing-proving mode, has been England's best bowler.
