  1. Eng 109-2published at 31.3 overs

    Now that's a good shot.

Nathan Lyon offers Malan some width and he crashes it past cover for four. 'Come on now, Garry,' echoes around Adelaide.

England have been very positive against the spinner, which makes a nice change from Brisbane.

If England collapse on a day like this people will lose patience. It is docile.

  3. Eng 105-2published at 31 overs

    Malan 54, Root 38

Forgot to mention that England's 100 came up during that over. The sun beams down on a very flat Adelaide pitch and it looks absolutely lovely.

I hope Nathan Lyon has got sun cream on his head, though.

Root is just a very good player. He is a busy player. You always like watching him bat because he is always looking to score runs and doesn't let a bowler settle for too long.

  5. Eng 105-2published at 30.3 overs

Another backfoot punch from Root brings him four thanks to a misfield at cover from Nathan Lyon.

I don't even need to describe the shot to you. You know how it goes. It's perfect.

  6. Eng 98-2published at 30 overs

Another lbw appeal on Root, this time he misses a sweep from Lyon. This one looks a lot closer to me than the last, but they don't review and the umpire looks at Lyon as if to say, dream on, mate.

    Shows what I know.

It feels like the 45-minute spell England got away with last night is significant.

Dawid Malan averages 47 in Australia compared to 22 in his other Tests in England and New Zealand.

  9. Eng 97-2published at 29 overs

    Malan 50, Root 34

An eventful over that delivered Malan's 50 and an optimistic Australia review.

Here's Joe Root smashing Nathan Lyon for four, because, why not.

  10. Not outpublished at 05:11 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2021

Missing the stumps. Poor review and Root survives.

    As you were.

That just suggests Australia feel they need a wicket. The bowler liked it but it feels like there was only a chance it might be out.

  12. Australia reviewpublished at 05:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2021

Now then. Michael Neser thinks he has Root lbw, but the umpire isn't convinced. Steve Smith agrees to a review, but Root just leans on his bat nonchalantly.

It has been a really calm innings. Malan has shown what a good selection it was to bring him back into the side.

  14. 50 runs

50 for Dawid Malanpublished at 05:09 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2021

A very calm and collected innings from England's number three.

A classic Test innings of rotating the strike and punishing the bad ball. Root shakes his hand and nods as if to say, well done, but keep going.

  15. Eng 96-2published at 28 overs

    Singles. Lots of singles.

Malan keeps the strike from the final ball as he drives to Cameron Green at cover. They're able to run mainly because he has such a long way down to the ground to field it.

Adelaide is a terrific place to bat. It is surprising South Australia haven't produced more Test batsmen.

  17. Eng 92-2published at 27 overs

    Malan 47, Root 32

Malan edges Neser but safely, the ball dropping in front of Steve Smith at slip who pulls off a very dramatic stop, spinning around on his knees like a child at a school disco.

The same batter drives straight down the ground for two to complete another productive over.

It is almost pointless telling the modern player not to play the reverse sweep.

I don't think Root needs to take the risk of the reverse sweep.
