Malan and Root scramble a very quick single, perhaps a little risky but Travis Head's throw from cover misses by a long way.
I think Jhye Richardson needs a rest. Seven from that over and the fifty partnership comes up.

Nathan Lyon will have a big part to play in this match.
Mitchell Starc's new spikes have obviously made the world of difference as he completes a maiden over this time.
Nathan Lyon is whirling his arms around. Take the hint, Steve Smith.

Malan edges - but safely, as the ball lands in front of Steve Smith at second slip and sneaks through for a single.
England have started very busily, rotating the strike well.

Dawid Malan, who scored eight from his first 37 balls - five from the inside edge - has now scored 16 from his last seven.
Malan thumps another drive down the ground for three to complete a productive over for him.
Starc pins Root on the thigh with the final ball before jogging off the pitch - not sure it's an injury, but probably to change his spikes because they're the reason his over conceded 11 runs. Obviously.

Even the Australians are being nice. A short and wide one from Starc.
My prediction comes true as Starc returns to the attack but he begins by a short, wide delivery that Malan cuts over gully for four runs.
He repeats it a second time with the same result, this time a little finer down to third man. Not the start that Starc would've liked.

Root looks busy and they look intent on rotating the strike. That is a crucial part for England in these early stages.

Mother Nature stepped in and helped England last night. Maybe that is the little thing they need to help turn it around.
Dawid Malan finally connects with a straight drive off Richardson that trickles its way to the boundary.
I suspect we'll see Mitchell Starc bowling soon.

Some guys bowl with rhythm and long loping strides. Neser has more of a sprint. There is a lot of energy when he gets to the crease.
A tidy over from Michael Neser concedes just a single.
Here's how he got his first Test wicket yesterday - with just his second ball. I doubt it's how he pictured it happening in his head, but I doubt he'll care either.
Loving the optimism from our followers this morning.
Joe Root treats us to his classic back-foot punch for four with both feet off the ground, a familiar sight to England fans. Glorious.

Patrick Weaver: It's not over until it's over. One record partnership is all that's needed.
Andy: Us England fans are suckers for punishment. Pivotal day ahead for England. Bat well and there is hope. Get wrecked and series is effectively over.
Malan gets away with yet another streaky inside edge that was meant to be a booming cover drive. That's not good for the nerves so early in the morning.

That no-ball by Richardson was Australia's first of the series. England have had 17 and more not called.

Malan is lucky there. That would have been a shattering start for England.
Oooh, streaky!
Dawid Malan goes for a drive that squirts off the inside edge, so nearly ricocheting into the stumps. He ends up with four instead and breathing a rather big sigh of relief, you'd imagine.
