Ben Stokes has been restrained in this series, although that has largely been dictated by the situations he's found himself in.

Stokes brings up England's hundred by helping himself to four as Mitchell Starc drifts down the leg side.

He's managed to rein in his attacking instincts so far but glimmers of frustration are just starting to show as he connects with a booming drive at Starc but finds the fielder at cover.

Jonny Bairstow will come out with the intent to score and put the pressure on the bowler without being reckless. If there's width he will throw his hands at it.

Bairstow runs out of patience and upper-cuts Starc over the slips for two as the bowler offers some width.

How long until we see Pat Cummins with the ball in hand again?

A couple of singles from Scott Boland's over as Bairstow and Stokes take their time to settle in.

Stokes is batting far out of his crease to counter the bounce, taking a couple of strides towards Boland at each delivery.

Ben Stokes has set his stall out to get in. He's shuffling around the crease which will not let the bowlers settle, especially when they are so accurate. It gives the bowler something to think about it.

Bairstow glances one off his hip for an easy single to get off the mark before Stokes releases a shot of aggression by pulling Starc for four.

Joe Root looked wonderful at the crease and played fluently. It just seems that every time he makes a mistake he is being punished by the loss of his wicket. I don't think it would affect the rest of the team, but from Root's perspective he'll be frustrated as someone who likes to lead by example.

Jonny Bairstow joins Stokes in the middle.

He's been called in to replace the out-of-sorts Ollie Pope. Coming in at 82-4 having not played Test cricket for months is hardly his dream scenario, I wouldn't have thought.
