The usual story for me on the Christmas present front - socks. How many pairs do my family think I go through in a calendar year?

Were any of you lucky enough to get a new cricket bat from a loved one? Or did you receive any cricket-themed gifts? Or, in fact, anything else usual in your stocking?

Australia have made two changes, with captain Pat Cummins, who missed the second Test in Adelaide after being deemed a close contact of someone who tested positive for Covid-19, returning to the side.

Scott Boland will become the second player with Indigenous Australian heritage to play for the men's Test team when he makes his debut at his home ground, following Jason Gillespie, who played his final match in 2006.

The 32-year-old fast bowler comes in for Jhye Richardson, with Michael Neser making way for Cummins.

Boland, who has played 17 games for Australia in white-ball cricket, has a strong record at the MCG in domestic cricket.

It is still raining. It did stop for a while but the players have gone back in again. It is just annoying drizzle. I don't think it is doing too much damage.

Elliot Newstead: Errrrr, rain? RAIN? This is not how you end Christmas Day, Melbourne.

  7. Toss delayedpublished at 22:54 Greenwich Mean Time 25 December 2021

    BBC weather

Okay, now some bad news. We're looking at a slightly delayed start in Melbourne by the looks of things.

It's overcast, there's a bit of rain falling and all the broadcasters delivering their seamless links on the outfield are clutching brollies. The toss has also been delayed.

Here's the forecast for the rest of today. I'm not John Ketley, but the rain is fairly light and I reckon we'll still get some play pretty soon.

England have made four changes to their team for the third Ashes Test at the MCG.

Opener Rory Burns and middle-order batsman Ollie Pope make way for Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow.

Fast bowler Mark Wood and spinner Jack Leach are selected instead of Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes.

We're down to the last few scraps of turkey, dad is asleep in front of a film and there's torn wrapping paper all over the living room floor...

Hopefully you've had a good Christmas Day and thanks for joining us for day one of the third Ashes Test from Melbourne.

England must win the Boxing Day Test to have any chance of regaining the Ashes. We'll have every wicket, run and catch plus all the news, views and talking points over the next five days (if it goes that far).
