Ultimately though, England did not have enough runs on the board and - for the third game running - find themselves on the wrong side of a thrilling encounter.

Heather Knight and co now need four wins from their last four games and other results to go their way if they are to reach the semi-finals.

South Africa, on the other hand, have given themselves every chance of making the top four.

South Africa captain Sune Luus on Sky Sports: "We do our best when we are putting the opposition under pressure and we have a world class bowling attack so I felt like we could restrict them to a total that we could chase down. I'm very happy it turned out like that tonight.

"Marizanne Kapp was world class. She shows her class every time she steps on to the field and she is such an inspiration to young girls and boys out there.

"Lizelle hasn't played much cricket in the past few months so she's just finding her feet, we're not putting too much pressure on her. But I'm glad that everyone chipped in today, it was totally a team effort and I'm so proud of the girls.

"Regardless of what happens in the rest of the tournament, we have made history today and nothing is going to change that. I think everyone in South Africa is very proud of us and we can be proud of ourselves too.

"It's exciting that we haven't played our best cricket yet."

England captain Heather Knight on Sky Sports: "It puts us in a tough position. I'll be honest, it's painful losing three close games in a row.

"At times we shot ourselves in the foot with our fielding. You can't give a player like Laura Wolvaardt that many chances, because she will make you pay.

"We are gutted with the situation. It's not through lack of effort or lack of graft but we have got another game very quickly and we've got to try and turn it around. Other games have got to go our way now, but there is still a chance and we will keep believing.

"I would've liked 15-20 more runs. They bowled well at the death, but we lost key wickets at key times going into those final 10 overs. Amy and Tammy batted brilliantly, their partnership was outstanding, but we just couldn't quite get over the line.

"We've got no other option than to turn it around very quickly and win that game against India. We are gutted, there will be some sad faces, but we've got to get everyone up and ready to come out fighting.

"Things haven't quite gone our way, but we haven't been good enough in certain areas so we've got to do better and put that right for the next game."

Player of the Match Marizanne Kapp on Sky Sports: "I just backed myself for the first time in a while. I remember what they did to us in the semi-final in 2017 and I knew I had to have better plans this time around.

"It's been brilliant that we haven't actually played our best cricket yet, especially with the bat, yet we still managed to get those runs together and walk away with the win.

"I'm just happy Dane was watching! It's so much harder without her, we miss her, but this win was for her."

It is not over for England but they are now relying on other results to go their way.

Defeat to Australia you expect. Defeat to West Indies and South Africa, you do not. It is pretty disastrous, and look at those celebrations from South Africa - that tells you all you need to know.

Credit to South Africa. They deserve that win. With the batting they just made good decisions the whole way through.

England were about 10-15 runs short and you think back to that key partnership between Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont when they were both set and got out. That was an important moment.
