South East Stars are the inaugural Charlotte Edwards Cup winners, following their five-wicket triumph against Northern Diamonds.

Charlotte Edwards' hopes of coaching the winning team in the competition that bears her name came to nothing when her Southern Vipers were beaten by Diamonds earlier in the day.

  2. 'We knew we had the depth' - Smithpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

South East Stars captain Bryony Smith:

"I'm absolutely buzzing. I'm so proud of all the girls.

"I think we really deserved this one. We were really positive, we knew it was a good pitch.

"We were a bit nervous when we lost a few in the middle, but we knew we had the depth to do it.

"(Alice Capsey) is a bit of a superstar, isn't she? She's a legend. I think she's going to be around for a very long time."

  3. 'Everyone put in a shift' - Capseypublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

South East Stars 139-5 beat Northern Diamonds 138-4 by five wickets

Player of the match Alice Capsey:

"It feels really good, we've played some really good cricket since coming back from The Hundred and today we showed it.

"We've got a really long batting line-up and everyone put in a shift today to chase it down and it feels great.

"To play with this team, it's a great environment and everyone backs each other up off the field too.

"It was great to contribute with the bat, but it feels even better to be part of a winning team."

Alice Capsey's 40 not out for Southern Stars made her the fourth batter to pass 200 runs in the inaugural Charlotte Edwards Cup this season.

And skipper Bryony Smith's 1-22 in the final against Northern Diamonds was enough to push her to the top of the competition's wicket-taking list with 14 at an economy rate of 5.34.

South East Stars came into today as favourites on paper. They have shown their class here in the final and have shown why they made it straight through. They played the way they have done throughout the competition and that was good enough for a convincing win here.

Kirstie White takes a single to mid-off and leaves the stage clear for the impressive Alice Capsey to clip Alex MacDonald through square leg for two - and that's the game for South East Stars, with 12 balls to spare.

Northern Diamonds did their bit with the bat as skipper Hollie Armitage's unbeaten 59 guided them tot a total which exceeded their earlier effort against Southern Vipers.

Bryony Smith and Aylish Cranstone launched the run-chase with a stand of 71, before a few moment of madness saw Stars slip from 71-0 to 85-4.

But teenager Alice Capsey answered the mini-crisis with a measured 40 not out and the trophy belongs to the Stars.

They've played really well after that wobble saw the door opening a bit for the Northern Diamonds. They've settled the nerves and got themselves on the brink.

Alice Davidson-Richards goes for glory, but Hollie Armitage pulls in an excellent catch at cover. Kirstie White is the new batter.

No side wants to finish second but it'll be a credible performance, certainly. I think what will hurt is that they were second in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy last year.

  10. Stars 133-4 - target 139published at 17 overs

    Capsey 37, Davidson-Richards 16

A little bit of showboating to little effect by Alice Capsey, but she eventually settles for a single off Jenny Gunn.

She and Alice Davidson-Richards rotate the strike from the final two deliveries and Stars need six runs from three overs.

Two maidens now would make it interesting. A wicket or two optional.

The experience of Alice Davidson-Richards, the impudence of Alice Capsey. A winning combination at the moment for the South East Stars.

    Capsey 35, Davidson-Richards 15

Now we have a reverse sweep from Alice Capsey - only one run, though.

Another over ticks by - there are four to come, but it would be astonishing if we need them all.

  13. Stars 125-4 - target 139published at 15.2 overs

    Capsey 34, Davidson-Richards 11

Superb placement by Alice Capsey as she clips Linsey Smith through mid-wicket for four. Maybe that should have been prevented from crossing the rope, but there's no denying the aesthetic pleasure of the stroke.

A forward defensive stroke in a T20 final. Stars have the luxury of Alice Davidson-Richards being able to demonstrate her defensive technique in Katie Levick's latest over.

It's a different technique, though, shown off by Alice Capsey as she drives the ball back over Levick's head for a glorious six.

Really good sportsmen and women make their sport look easy. Alice Capsey, who turned 17 last month, makes batting look easy.

Alex MacDonald mixes things up, some pushed through, some given a bit of air.

Eventually, Alice Capsey decides she has shown enough respect to the bowler and hits it over mid-off - but only just - for four runs.

Stars need 29 from 36 balls now.

One of the advantages of playing in the first game earlier is that the Diamonds have been able to work this pitch out and the likes of MacDonald and Gunn are using it to their advantage now.

  18. Stars 102-4 - target 139published at 13 overs

    Capsey 14, Davidson-Richards 8

Diamonds summon their most experienced bowler, Jenny Gunn, who took four wickets earlier in the day against Vipers.

Alice Davidson-Richards pushes it away through the off-side for one as the Stars total reaches three figures.

Six from it and you still feel Stars only have to keep their heads here to win that Charlotte Edwards trophy.

  19. Stars 96-4 - target 139published at 12 overs

    Capsey 12, Davidson-Richards 5

A poor ball from Hollie Armitage is pulled away for four, easy as you like, by Alice Capsey.

The Diamonds skipper is struggling in vain to find a consistent length and eight come from the over. Eight more remain, with 43 needed by Stars.

Just been told the attendance figure for today's finals.

A crowd of 1,270 have come along for these two matches, which is not bad considering we're in the middle of a Test match, an women's international series and a round of County Championship matches.

Let's hope it's a platform for years ahead.
