  2. 'The Dukes balls are rubbish, to be honest'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 25 August 2022

    BBC Test Match Special

England bowler Stuart Broad, speaking to Test Match Special: "We fancied having a bowl. We felt the clouds would help the ball move a little bit. I wasn't that disappointed to lose the toss. I was amazed how much the ball nipped today."

On Ollie Robinson: "He exposed the conditions early. He moved the ball a lot along with Jimmy first thing. He was unlucky today, but that is how Test cricket goes sometime."

On the Dukes balls: "The balls are rubbish, to be honest. We've struggled with them all year for some reason. Today was probably the most out of shape we'd had all summer.

"We just have to accept this summer there has been some sort of malfunction and hopefully Dukes change it and get it right next summer."

On being padded up to be the 'Nighthawk': "When you've bowled a team out for a low score, we're thinking try and get a quick 20 or 30 tonight, then Leachy would take over with 10 minutes to go to do the old nightwatchman role. We're just trying to be adaptable and do the game slightly differently."

Zak Crawley is 75 balls for 17 runs and I think his team-mates will be pleased with him. It looked easier as the day wore on with the softness of the ball in South Africa's innings. Batting gets significantly easier after 30 overs or so which allows your middle order and the aggressive players. So Zak Crawley being willing to do the hard yards. He'd have watched this summer wishing he was there when the ball was being smashed around the ground. Now he has an opportunity to go after the ball when it's 40 overs or so old.

The summer of Bairstow was interrupted by a relatively long break between the end of the India Test and the start of this series.

A couple of low scores at Lord's led to concerns that the Yorkshireman's magic run was over but he's played another crucial knock for England at Old Trafford today.

Bairstow has put on an unbroken 68 with Zak Crawley for the fourth wicket and will start day two on 38...

As always with England, it is the batting that brings fans out in cold sweats.

The early dismissal of Alex Lees had them perspiring again, Ollie Pope was then bowled by Anrich Nortje and when Joe Root edged Kagiso Rabada to slip it was panic stations - in the crowd if not the England dressing room...

In a low-scoring contest the price on Joe Root's wicket is much higher. He was just starting to move his feet well, rotate the strike, and play shots. But it was a really good ball by Kagiso Rabada to get him. The angle Rabada bowls at really causes problems, from wide of the crease. If it stands up as that one to Joe Root does you have to play at it. Joe if he was hyper critical would think he should have left it, but it might have removed his off stump. It was good captaincy as well because Dean Elgar realised it was a crucial moment in the game and brought Rabada back into the attack at that time.

The overcast conditions in Manchester gave England's attack the ideal conditions to get stuck into the South Africa attack.

They did just that, reducing the Proteas to 77-5 at lunch before Jimmy Anderson rammed home the advantage in the afternoon session with two wickets in three balls.

South Africa were eventually bowled out for 151. Anderson and Stuart Broad claimed three wickets apiece.

With the team South Africa have gone with, they had to bat first. When you're in England you look at overhead conditions, and they probably said bowl first this morning. I think they'll be more disappointed with a couple of soft wickets that got them into a really bad spot before lunch.

A superb day for England after South Africa won the toss and elected to bat.

Dean Elgar may be regretting that decision now. His side were rolled for 151 as England's bowlers impressed.

At 43-3, England were in trouble and the South Africa seamers were pumped. But Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow dug in before the latter kicked on to take the home side to within 40 runs of parity with seven first-innings wickets remaining.

The best 17 not out Zak Crawley has scored. He's occupied the crease which is very important. Jonny Bairstow has done the runscoring but Crawley is still there. He's not played many shots on the off side. It might be a different game from him tomorrow if he can get in again. It's was a characterful innings from him.

The crowd appreciate England getting to the close three down from 40-odd for three. Lots of action in that first day. Jonny Bairstow to the fore and Zak Crawley in defensive mode, but he's still there.

  13. Close of playpublished at 28 overs

    Eng 111-3

A job well done by Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley. Just a single from Simon Harmer's over before Crawley safely negotiates the last five balls.

From 43-3, this partnership has helped England reassert themselves in a very strong position in this match after skittling South Africa for 151.

  14. Eng 110-3published at 27 overs

We've got time for one more over and it's going to be Simon Harmer. The off-spinner has had so much success with Essex in this country but this will be his first Test over in England.

  15. Eng 110-3published at 26.4 overs

A boundary for Zak Crawley! On the pads from Maharaj and swept confidently by the England opener.

They're all useful runs for England at this stage.

  16. Eng 105-3published at 26 overs

Maiden from Ngidi to Crawley. The England opener plays a couple of nice shots but is unable to beat the in-field.

Tight leave to finish. Ngidi brought the ball back a fair way but Crawley had his angles just about right.

Four minutes left in the day. If Bairstow and Crawley get through to stumps, England will be delighted with their day one.

It's been a remarkable innings from Zak Crawley. There's been one waft at wide one from Anrich Nortje. But otherwise he's not offered anything.

  18. Eng 105-3published at 25 overs

    Trail by 46

The spin of Maharaj is not looking too threatening at this stage. Seven come from his latest, Crawley able to push a pair of singles to tick over. He's battled hard for England in this evening session.

It's a nice shot from Jonny Bairstow. He's got the angle perfectly. He's at his bristling best, even if there's 10 minutes of play left runs are runs.

  20. 100 runs

    Eng 103-3published at 24.3 overs

    Bairstow 35, Crawley 12

Maharaj strays onto leg stump and Bairstow is able to sweep and get the ball away fine, past short fine leg.

Four runs and that takes England past 100.
