Jonny Bairstow doesn't try to hit too hard, just times it beautifully.

The second time Jonny Bairstow has hit that cover drive. It's his shot of the summer. The crowd willed the ball to the boundary.
Glorious. Too full from Ngidi, there's width on offer too and Bairstow caresses the ball through the covers for four.
The outfield is quite damp so the ball slows but just crawls its way to the boundary cushion.

Misfield by Maharaj as Bairstow cuts. Its greeted by huge cheers form the Old Trafford crowd and the ball runs away to the fence.
That brings up the fifty partnership. Bairstow has added 27, Crawley just four and South Africa have generously donated the rest in extras.
Maiden over from Maharaj. It takes a few minutes longer than it might have due to the most pointless of umpire reviews for a stumping.
The ball slid down leg, Crawley had both feet inside the crease, his front foot did moved out of it but the back leg remained rooted to the ground. Worth spending two or three minutes checking though...
This fourth-wicket partnership has been a good one. Jonny Bairstow has been the senior partner and has hit a couple of very nice boundaries...

The late afternoon crowd are really enjoying the fluency of the shots from Jonny Bairstow in the sunshine. It's certainly been a high-value day for those at Old Trafford today.
Another good shot form Bairstow, punching the ball through mid-off for two.
Ngidi does managed to bring one back and rap Bairstow on the pads but an inside edge cuts short any appeals in the throats of the South Africans.
We've got about 20 minutes left in the day.
It's a double bowling change, Lungi Ngidi is also back on for another burst.

Bairstow holds back against Maharaj for the time being, just clipping a single to leg from the third ball.
Meanwhile, Crawley's innings so far has been all about restraint but he shows signs of life by springing out of his crease and whipping the ball leg side. Only a single, the spinner saw him coming and dragged his length back.
We're into the extra half hour and Keshav Maharaj is coming back on to bowl.
Bairstow 19, Crawley 10
Brilliant running. Bairstow is rapid, Crawley is quick too and when the former nudges the ball into the leg side, there is no hesitation about pushing for two. They make it look comfortable.
A leg bye from the last makes it 14 from the over. A very productive one in what looks like being a low-scoring contest.

You get the impression Jonny Bairstow is trying to put the pressure back on the South Africa seamers and to make matter worse it was a no-ball.

Here we go, I remember this Jonny Bairstow!
After gloving Rabada's first ball down leg for four, he adds two through square leg before thumping the third through extra cover for four more.

Olly Pryce-Jones: England haven’t won a Test match where Root hasn’t got to fifty in either innings since August 2020 and has an average of 70 in matches won in that period. A low score in the first innings from him and I can’t help but feel nervous.

Nortje is bowling very, very quickly but not always with great control.
He overcooks another bouncer and the ball is up, over Crawley, over Verreynne and away for five wides.
Crawley then nudges a single before the scoring for the over is completed by a leg bye.
Kagiso Rabada is different class, isn't he?
The South Africa fast bowler claimed his first wicket of the innings a short while ago, and it was the big one. Joe Root gone after edging to slip.

South Africa will feel they have to make some inroads and with an hour left you will see the bowlers really charge in. With it being a low-scoring game they will be thankful for those three wickets, and hope to add one or two more before the close. England will find it tough for batting. As a bowler I loved these periods.

England will know how important it is to finish the night three down. They are facing a barrage of high-quality pace bowling. Survival is the key.
