Covers back on. They've somehow managed to not play through the sunshine, but will now watch it rain.

    And there it is.

The rain starts to fall with just less than 10 minutes to go until play is due to start, and the covers are being brought on. It's going to be one of those days, isn't it?

South Africa captain Dean Elgar: "It looks like a good surface but there might be something in it in the first session so we will have to knuckle down with bat in hand and start well.

"Talent and skill is one thing but something I really look for and like in a cricket player is if they show character and that's what we need.

"We didn't have the greatest second Test but it is still 1-1 and we would have taken that coming into the series.

"Runs are key. We have the 20 wickets covered with our bowlers but we need to give them the chance to strike well and bowl to something."

England captain Ben Stokes: "It is a bit of strategy and the pitch. We've done well bowling first this summer and with the weather we've had it has been under cover a bit and hopefully we can utilise covers.

"I'm massively disappointed for Jonny [Bairstow]. He's been phenomenal and the spearhead of what we've done and he should be very proud of that and what he's achieved. Harry Brook thoroughly deserves this opportunity. I am really excited for him to go and show what he can do.

"I don't think our approach changes because of the change. We'll play what is ahead of us. We'll concentrate on the bowling this morning and then as the game goes deeper we'll play the game in front of us accordingly."

  9. England win the toss and choose to bowlpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 8 September 2022

Ben Stokes gets his way and puts South Africa in to bat, which is probably as predicted with the weather around.

We'll have reaction from both captains and the team news for you shortly.

South Africa have a formidable seam attack with good speed and good variation. If Marco Jansen comes back they have the left-arm angle as well.

So if they win the toss, put England into bat and take one or two quick wickets the batting line-up will immediately be under pressure. But if you don't take early wickets it is not the end of the world and if a shower comes along it will break the batsman's concentration as well.

Still no sign of rain. I don't want to say it's looking good because we all know what will happen as soon as I do.

The toss will take place in five minutes.

Traditionally The Oval is a good wicket, Surrey have scored plenty of runs on it this year. It looks a reasonable pitch and pitches in England this summer have tended not to deteriorate. But we know both sides are fragile at the top of their batting order, though we have also seen how England have had great success chasing this summer.

So I'd guess it is very likely that whoever wins the toss will ask the opposition to bat first.

While Harry Brook has been given his first cap, James Anderson has been given his 175th.

    Yes, 175 Tests.

    Madness.

A lovely moment as England's debutant Harry Brook has just been awarded his Test cap ahead of the toss and is photographed with his family.

He has been in the Test squad all summer but yet to play, and made 140 in the England Lions fixture against South Africa before the series began.

He is replacing the injured Jonny Bairstow.

BBC Weather's Simon King: "Be cautious of the weather apps today as we are in a situation where they tend not to paint the whole picture. On days like this look at the radar and what is happening right now.

"It is dry and sunny at the moment but I can see on the radar some heavy showers to the south west on London and they are moving in a north-easterly direction.

"11:30 is probably the time they are going to arrive at The Oval, and they will be intense. So like we saw at Lord's we could see a similar situation where when it does rain there will be a lot of water to get rid of.

"When this batch of showers clears there will be a dry spell with further isolated spells behind it, so there is a continued risk of catching a shower in the afternoon.

"The promising news is things are set to quieten down over the weekend. It is looking dry Saturday and Sunday and even into Monday."

It's the last Test of what's been a pretty remarkable summer. It's the decider.
