At this stage it is balanced. England are creeping along at six runs an over and the ball is moving, it's swinging for the Irish. It's going to be a challenge and a really tight finish.

England actually managed 10 from that 10th over, helped by a couple of wides. Moving in the right direction for the first time in a long time. Drinks. Is is too early for a brandy?

There is some serious movement on offer at the MCG. You don't see it too often in T20 cricket.

This is what Hand did to Ben Stokes. Neck and crop. Now he's beating the edge of Harry Brook. It's like England have been blindfolded.

There are some very smug New Zealand commentators at the moment, Ian Smith is sat back smiling, arms folded.

Fionn Hand starts an over with a wide down the leg side to Malan, who shakes his head. He can't believe how much the ball is moving.

The Ireland fans are cheering all of these dots. I think the Aussies in the ground are too.

A wide shot of Melbourne makes it look like Gotham City. The hulking stadium, skyscrapers in the background, moody cloud overhead. England need Batman to get them out of this.

England would normally see this as quite a comfortable chase, even at this stage, but given the fact that there is some extra bounce, some pace, some movement. It is going to be a challenge, for sure.

  13. Eng 49-3published at 8.4 overs

    Target 158

The huge difference has been the control of the Ireland seamers, who have exploited the conditions with the length they have bowled. England got carried away with the short ball and were punished by Balbirnie.

I’m a huge fan of Woakes the cricketer and the man but surely someone of his experience should have realised that bowling full in the opening overs was the way to go. Ireland are showing that now.

The two is always on. Just stretch the fielder, put him under pressure and he might make a mistake.

England will be delighted with that, they needed a boundary and it felt like the only way they were going to get it was with a bit of luck.
