  1. Post update

What a day it has been. My colleague Matthew Henry's match report from an extraordinary match in Adelaide is now live.

In Friday's earlier match New Zealand beat Ireland to seal their place in the semi-finals.

For England the equation is simple - beat Sri Lanka on Saturday and they are into the last four.

We will be back for ball-by-ball commentary of that crucial game. For now though, it's farewell.

  2. Post update

And in case you were wondering, the weather forecast for Sydney tomorrow is looking good.

  3. 'It feels like we can get through to the semis'

Australia's captain Matthew Wade: "I knew it was going to be a tight one and I've seen Rashid Khan do that in the IPL. It would've been good to get some of the run rate back. I haven't seen a team bowl that well at the end. The bowlers took the pace off and bowled yorkers.

"We'll stay the extra night here and watch Sri Lanka. We'll have our Sri Lanka caps here for sure but we're not sure how likely it will be but we will cheer them home.

"It's been frustrating we have been a little bit slow. It would've been nice to not get a flogging in the first game.

"Sri Lanka got the Asia Cup, so it's never a guarantee. Their bowling attacks and can do some damage.

"If we don't get through it will be frustrating looking at the game you don't want to be peaking too much right now. It feels like we can get through to the semis somehow."

  4. 'It's heartbreaking'

England former batter and Afghanistan's current coach Jonathan Trott: "We messed up in the overs in the middle when we lost three wickets in Zampa's last over. We seem to get ourselves into positions where we can kick on with the bat. Rash's cameo showed what he is capable of. It's heartbreaking really.

"I have a lot of pride in them and we've been here for five weeks and had a long pre tournament camp so it is disappointing. The guys will be disappointed and hopefully they will learn from it.

"Obviously we wanted to win and came away with something to show and be proud of. England are in charge of their own destiny and I'm sure that's how they would want it.

"I think you've always known the talent is there in Afghanistan but it's about harnessing it and structuring it.

"Playing for England we are very lucky with the things are afforded to us. Afghanistan are very new to international cricket and hopefully the infrastructure can keep improving and support the players.

"Greater support will go a long way and more consistent.

"the frustration for me is seeing how they can play in parts. The job for me as coach is to get us to play a bit more consistently."

  5. Post update

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi: "It was a really good game of cricket tonight, we started really well and at the end Naveen and Farooqi bowled very well at the end as well.

"It was a big total to chase on that pitch but the way we started in the powerplay and in the middle as well... we threw away four wickets back-to-back to put us under pressure.

"It's really tough when you play the first day and then you have 10 days without a game (because of rain). We didn't get any momentum in the tournament but tonight was a really good game."

  6. 'Afghanistan gave us a bit of a scare'

Player of the match, Australia's Glenn Maxwell: "It did get close. Afghanistan played really well, they struck the ball really cleanly and put us under pressure in the powerplay.

"Luckily we were able to hold them back but then there was some pretty clean hitting towards the back end and they gave us a bit of a scare."

On his run out: "It was nice to have an impact in the field, I knew I wasn't going to have much impact with the ball, the conditions the way they were, the ball was skidding on a bit more."

On his batting: ""The wicket was quite slow, it was taking spin and holding up a little bit so it was a bit hard to press the issue. We got to around the 12-over mark and we just had to put a total on the board to put a total on the board and give us a chance to win the game.

"Even though we were trying to go hard at the end, they bowled extremely well in the last four overs, and they were hard to get away."

On the England game: "We'll certainly be keeping an eye on it and hopefully Sri Lanka can do a favour for us."

  7. Post update

Glenn Maxwell has been named Player of the Match - we will hear from him shortly.

He hit a magnificent 54 from 32 balls as well as being razor sharp in the field, with his throw from long-on to run out Gulbadin turning the match in Australia's favour.

  8. Post update

Rashid Khan ends unbeaten on 48 from just 23 deliveries, he very nearly dragged Afghanistan over the line.

For Australia, the holders don't forget, their fate is out of their hands.

All eyes will now be on the SCG tomorrow as England take on Sri Lanka.

What a game! What a tournament!

We thought Australia would bowl Afghanistan out. Now Australia need Sri Lanka to beat England tomorrow. England just need to win for them to get through.

What an extraordinary game of cricket!

  10. Australia win by four runs

Rashid Khan smashes the final ball away into the leg-side for a one-bounce four - but it is not enough!

Afghanistan fall just short after an absolutely thrilling match and Australia win by four runs.

Wow. This tournament delivers yet again.

  11. Afg 160-7

Rashid Khan skies the ball miles into the Adelaide sky....it lands safe...but Afghanistan can only run two!

That should be it for Australia - nine needed off the final ball.
