  1. What happens if rain affects us?published at 07:48 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2022

We've spent much of the build-up worrying about the weather. There is still a chance we may get interrupted by some thundery showers.

If it does affect us, here are the rules that we'll be following:

    • The minimum game we can play is a 10-over per side match
    • We can play until 12:40 GMT today
    • "Every effort" will be made to get a result today
    • There is a reserve day on Monday - play would start at 04:00 GMT if that is needed
    • If Monday is needed the match would resume from where it stops today. So if we get four overs in, we'd start the first ball in the fifth over
    • We have seven hours and 10 minutes to play with on Monday
    • If we still can't get a result over the two days the sides will share the trophy
  2. How have England turned it around?published at 07:46 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2022

England have had their own struggles to reach this point too.

They've faced three must-win games in a row, to get out of the Super 12s and then in the semi-finals, after defeat to Ireland and a washout against Australia.

    How have they done it?

Our man on the ground Matthew Henry has brought us, and you, some of the reasons how.

A reminder, or perhaps a first look because I know people tune in specially for finals, at how England have reached this showpiece final at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

England's route to the final: Afghanistan (S12): Won by five wickets, Ireland (S12): Lost by five runs (DLS), Australia (S12): Match abandoned, New Zealand (S12): Won by 20 runs, Sri Lanka (S12): Won by four wickets, India (SF): Won by 10 wicketsImage source, Getty Images/BBC Sport

It was like a game of Where's Wally trying to spot anyone in an England shirt when I walked into the ground earlier.

It was a sea of green Pakistan shirts and flags.

    England will be heavily outnumbered.

Pakistan's fascination with 1992 goes far beyond that being the year of their greatest triumph, which remains their only ODI World Cup trophy.

It was the moment a whole country fell deeply and hopelessly in love with cricket.

It wasn't just the beautiful crystal trophy they won. It was the hearts and minds of a nation. It was a future prime minister in World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan and the cancer hospitals he would go on to found.

Imran's counter-punching batting in the final, Inzamam-ul-Haq's blistering knock and especially Wasim Akram's breathtaking spell of fast bowling live rent free in the minds of many fans.

Aged seven, I was one of those fans.

As has been mentioned countless times in the build-up to this game it is a re-match of the 1992 50-over World Cup final, which took place on the same ground.

Pakistan ran out 22-run winners on that occasion.

Captain Imran Khan called his side "cornered tigers" after losing three, and having a washout, in their first five group games, but they recovered to be successful.

Pakistan lost their opening two games in this tournament too, don't forget...

Hello from the MCG. After all of the talk of rain it has been a lovely day in Melbourne. I'm a little sunburnt but that doesn't take much.

We could still get a shower this evening but things look a lot better than they did 48 hours ago.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "We would have bowled first today. We want to put runs on the board now and put pressure on England.

"We have good momentum with us and we'll try and continue that. We've come back strongly and we'll try to continue in that vein.

"We've got confidence and the way they team are playing is outstanding.

"History is repeating itself and we'll try win this match and hold the World Cup."

England captain Jos Buttler: "There is a great energy around the stadium and we are looking forward to a great game.

"I think both teams come into this in red hot form and we look forward to a tough challenge. I think it looks a good wicket. Hopefully it stays that way. There is a bit of weather around which is why we chose to bowl first.

"We start fresh today. We bring confidence from the other day but it counts for nothing today."

    Breaking

    1-0 to England?

Jos Buttler calls correctly and he wants England to have a chase later on.

That is how they won the 50-over World Cup in 2019 (kind of...) and how they so impressively got into today's final.
