  1. Lyth & Wiese star in comfortable Superchargers win over Phoenix

Birmingham Phoenix's winning streak came to an end as they suffered a 32-run defeat at the hands of Northern Superchargers.

Adam Lyth struck six sixes in a destructive innings of 56 from 26 balls at the top of the order as Superchargers posted 169-6.

Phoenix's bowlers chipped away in the middle overs but Adam Hose's 53 not out and David Wiese's 34 from 14 balls provided a valuable boost at the end of the innings.

Wiese, who was named Match Hero, also starred with the ball, taking 3-15.

The home side's powerful batting order struggled to keep up with the run-rate in the chase, with big hitters Will Smeed, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali all falling cheaply.

It was a convincing win in the end for Faf du Plessis' Superchargers, who kept their qualification hopes alive with their second win of the competition, while defeat means Phoenix missed an opportunity to go top of the table.

"We've given ourselves some hard work to do to qualify for the play-off but it's nice to build a bit of momentum," said Wiese. "You don't want to peak too early and you want to take that into the back end of the tournament. You never know, we might continue this and a couple of games might pay off and we might sneak into those play-off spots."

    Here's what else happened:

    • Phoenix captain Moeen Ali took 2-13, including the key wicket of Adam Lyth.
    • Phoenix slipped from 74-2 to 99-5 before David Wiese provided a counter-attacking innings that included four sixes in a key partnership with Adam Hose.
    • Will Smeed and Miles Hammond raced to 45 from 24 balls for the first wicket before Smeed was dismissed by Willey - sparking a collapse to 68-5.
    • Imran Tahir - a man not known for his batting - hit the last ball of Birmingham Phoenix's innings for six to provide some late cheer for the home fans.

    What's next?

    • Northern Superchargers are back in action on Sunday 21 August as they take on Manchester Originals in a northern derby, while Birmingham Phoenix travel to London to face Oval Invincibles on Tuesday 23 August.
  2. 'We might sneak into the play-offs'

    David Wiese

Match Hero, Northern Superchargers' David Wiese, who scored 34 off 14 and took 3-15, speaking to Sky Sports: "Sometimes it works out at the end there and you find a couple in the middle. It's kind of what I've been doing in the whole tournament coming in towards the back end of the innings to capitalise on the guys that gave us a good start and thankfully tonight it came off.

"It's all about confidence when you go in there. You've got to believe in yourself. If something is your first ball or your fifth ball you've got to back yourself to clear that. If it's in the zone you go for it and sometimes it pays off for you.

"We've given ourselves some hard work to do to qualify for the play-off but it's nice to build a bit of momentum. You don't want to peak to early and you want to take that into the back end of the tournament. You never know, we might continue this and a couple of games might pay off and we might sneak into those play-off spots."

  3. 'Tonight will do us a load of confidence'

    Northern Superchargers

Northern Superchargers captain Faf du Plessis, speaking to Sky Sports: "When you get on a roll, losing three on the bounce, you need something to get the momentum again. Tonight will do us a load of confidence.

"We pushed it as wide as possible especially with the big boundary. On this sort of wicket it stops a bit. It's just trying to hit that channel.

"To be honest I thought we were a little bit under par [with our runs]. But wickets will always bring you back into the game.

"I think we've played really good cricket. We've just let ourselves down a little bit with our catches. It's those small margins. If you don't take your chances against good players they will hurt you.

"We needed a celebration like this tonight in the changing room."

I have to commend this bowling performance especially on that short side. They've bowled with pace, skill and they've bowled smartly to knock over some of those big hitters.

We've got plenty of entertainment from this match but just not the close finish we might have hoped.

A rare boundary as Tom Helm whips a four to the legside off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo. It will be too little too late though.
