Oval Invincibles gave their men's Hundred hopes a major boost by cruising to a six-wicket victory over London Spirit at Lord's.

The Invincibles chased 123 with 14 balls to spare to jump from fifth to third in the table, two points behind second-placed Spirit who would have secured a place in the knockout stage with a win.

Sam Curran led the Invincibles' bowling attack with 3-16 as they restricted the hosts to just 122-7.

Adam Rossington top-scored with 36 while all-rounder Jordan Thompson continued his impressive form with a cameo of 27 down the order.

Invincibles lost four wickets but looked in control throughout, with opener Will Jacks smashing 54 from just 38 balls to break the back of the chase.

Tom Curran finished with 19 not out from nine balls to secure the victory, capping an evening to remember for the brothers.

    What else happened?

    • Leg spinner Peter Hatzoglou made his Hundred debut and took the big wicket of Spirit opener Ben McDermott with his second ball.
    • Eoin Morgan was run out backing up at the non-striker's end for the second time in the competition, scoring just five.
    • Matt Milnes took a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Dan Lawrence and put Spirit on the back foot at the halfway stage.
    • Jacks hit five fours and two sixes in his half-century when most other batters struggled to score quickly.

    What happens next?

    • London Spirit play Birmingham Phoenix on Tuesday 30 August in their final match of the group stage.
    • Oval Invincibles' eighth and final group stage match is against Manchester Originals on Wednesday 31 August.

  3. 'Sam Curran loves the pressure moments'published at 21:48 British Summer Time 27 August 2022

Sam Billings on Sam Curran: "He's world class. He's involved in all aspects of the game and he's a character that you want in those pressure moments. He loves it.

"He's really smart. That wicket of Rossington was a key one, we know how dangerous he can be. But yeah, Sam really took wickets at key moments tonight."

Oval Invincibles captain Sam Billings on Sky Sports: "A really good win, we needed it to stay in the competition. They were top of the table, it brings everyone back into it. I think five or six teams could qualify now. It's exciting.

"Obviously Sunil Narine and his quality, anyone is going to miss him but Peter Hatzoglou comes in and not many people have seen him play over here. He's done really well in the Big Bash and he bowled beautifully.

"We played like a proper team tonight. Everybody contributed and the fielding was top class. That really was an element of our game that we haven't brought so far so tonight was really pleasing in that respect.

"That reverse sweep catch (from Matt Milnes) was probably catch of the tournament and then Will Jacks with that run out of Eoin Morgan. Two huge moments for us that really changed the game."

  6. 'We needed that victory'published at 21:43 British Summer Time 27 August 2022

Match hero Sam Curran, who took 3-16, speaking to Sky Sports: "We needed that victory, it's pretty simple for us now, we know if we win our last two games we give ourselves a chance.

"A great win for us and the guys will take that to Old Trafford on Wednesday.

"We've struggled to take wickets in the power play, that's what we focused on. I thought we bowled really well as a unit.

"Will Jacks should be standing here. He had an amazing knock and has done it all season. He blasted through the chase for us and gave us guys in the middle order one job to do.

"We've had so many changes recently with injuries and guys leaving. Hopefully in these lads few games we can form more bonds. We did what we needed to tonight with the win.

    "Every game is important."

It was a great bowling effort - led by Sam Curran - to set up the win for Oval Invincibles and then Will Jacks came out and did his thing with the bat.

The result never really looked in doubt once he got going.

    With 14 balls to spare

Sam Billings finishes the job. He guides the ball down to the deep third boundary and that is a convincing win for the Invincibles.

They've done the double over their city rivals, London Spirit, today.

I don't think he picked it up straight away did Mason Crane. He might have lost it in the lights.

Sam Curran wanted to finish it in style but he's caught on the boundary by Mason Crane, who does very well not to step on the boundary cushion.

There was a slight delay as one replay suggested Crane's foot did hit the cushion but the wicket stands. Good catch after throwing it up for himself to readjust.

We've got a slight delay due to a fan getting on the pitch. The TV cut away but based on the crowd reaction, I reckon he sidestepped the first steward but was dealt with by the second.

Either way, he's off the field of play now and Jordan Thompson is ready to bowl with the Spirit needing a miracle.

    Need seven more to win

The Invincibles are nearly there now. Tom Curran ends Ellis' set with another boundary.

This one isn't out of the middle of the bat but there is more than enough on it to beat the in-field and run away to the boundary cushion.

  16. Invincibles 109-3published at 23 balls left

    Need 14 more to win

Tom Curran is in a hurry. Nathan Ellis is a specialist death bowler but Curran isn't bothered about that.

After swinging another boundary away leg side, he muscles the next ball down the ground for four more.

It's over to the Curran brothers now as Tom joins Sam out in the middle.

Tom powers the ball away through the leg side for four late in Thompson's set. That'll settle a few nerves for the Invincibles.
