Manchester Originals reached the men's Hundred eliminator after beating Oval Invincibles by six wickets, with just a ball to spare, in a thrilling contest at Old Trafford.

In a game where the winning side would finish second and the losing side eliminated, Invincibles recovered from 23-3 to post 143-9.

Captain Sam Billings top-scored for Invincibles with a terrific 53 off 33 balls, but it was Ireland seamer Josh Little who stole the show, taking a superb 5-13 from his 20 deliveries.

In reply, Wayne Madsen, who successfully overturned an lbw decision on his first ball, scored an unbeaten 53 off 39 deliveries as Originals chased down the target in a tense finale.

For the majority of the innings, Originals looked in control. But with 25 still needed off 14 balls, Invincibles seemed to be clawing their way back, before Ashton Turner hit Sam Curran for a six down the ground, followed by a four into the leg side, to alleviate the pressure.

The game then turned again when Turner was brilliantly run out by Billings for 26.

The home side needed 11 runs from the final five deliveries. The unlikely scenario of a tie, in which both teams could be eliminated and Birmingham Phoenix would progress, was becoming a real possibility.

Then came one of the most significant moments of the game. Paul Walter launched the 96th ball of the innings, bowled by Matthew Milnes, into the leg side. Will Jacks, fielding on the boundary, could only parry it over for six.

With one run needed off two balls, Walter scrambled the single needed, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Originals will play London Spirit on Friday in Southampton, with the winner facing group leaders Trent Rockets in Saturday’s final at Lord’s.

    Here’s what also happened:

    • Original’s Walter took a stunning catch on the boundary rope, running round from deep square leg and diving to his right, to dismiss Invincibles opener Rilee Rossouw.
    • Sam Curran scored an 18-ball 24 for Invincibles, while brother Tom smashed 16 off seven balls before running himself out.
    • Invincibles' Hilton Cartwright was bizarrely dismissed by Little for 14 after edging the ball whilst crouching away from a delivery.
    • Originals opener Phil Salt hit 19 off 14 deliveries before being caught on the boundary off the bowling of Danny Briggs.
    • Spinner Briggs took 2-24, while Sam Curran finished with 0-35 from 20 deliveries.

    Josh Little's bowling map

Manchester Originals bowler Josh Little, speaking to BBC Sport: "I've never been so nervous in my life. I'm absolutely delighted with that.

"I just tried to keep it as simple as possible and luckily it came off today. For me it's a fast-paced game and the guys have been nice so I feel good.

"When things are going well, we just want to get a win.

"Phil Salt actually messaged on Instagram that they were keen to get me in and I headed down after Ireland's series with Afghanistan."

  3. 'It got a little twitchy'published at 21:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

The run map shows Wayne Madsen scored 53 with 6 fours, 1 three, 4 two, and 18 singles for Manchester Originals Men

Manchester Originals' Wayne Madsen speaking to BBC Sport: "It got a little bit tight towards the end and we knew it was going to be tough.

"The ball on that wicket was always going to grip. Paul at the end came through in the last over.

"We wanted to win it with five balls to spare. That was going to be the key to the chase. Fortunately we managed to stay with the rates. But it got a bit twitchy towards the end!

"We thought we were going to get over the line as long as we got wickets in hand. It was important that we kept trying to find a boundary at the first bit of each set.

"I think for me my reverse sweep is a big shot and as soon as there is an opportunity to go over the top I am looking to take it.

"We knew it was going to be tricky, but we've got a huge belief in this squad. We had good chats about it and were relaxed and that's what switched it.

"The chat at the end was just: strike it out the ground!"

While all the talk will be about that dramatic last-gasp finish with the bat, a word on 22-year-old Irishman Josh Little.

Playing just his third game for the Originals, he took the best bowling figures in The Hundred, finishing with 5-13 to restrict the Invincibles to 143.

Wayne Madsen finishes with an unbeaten 53, but Paul Walter is the hero.

12 not out with that crucial six to swing the game back in the Originals' favour.

Remember, Originals lost their first three games and looked completely out of it! Instead, it's the Invincibles who miss out - so agonisingly close.

    Right then. A reminder.

Whoever wins this game, goes through to the eliminator.

If it's a tie - and no one wins - then Birmingham Phoenix go through!

And the equation is 11 off five balls, so literally any of those results are possible.

    Let's go.
