  1. NZ 182-3published at 70 overs

    Williamson 18, Nicholls 5

So close! Nicholls comes forward to Leach again, another inside edge shoots towards Pope but he can't quite get his fingertips underneath this one.

It went quickly and to his right, reached him on the half-volley and it would've been another brilliant catch.

  2. NZ 180-3published at 69 overs

Loose from Henry Nicholls. Robinson angles the ball across him and the Kiwi left-hander swishes at it.

No edge on this occasion. That would've been a real gift.

It's the old cricket cliché, but the last hour could be vital here. New Zealand will still think they have a chance. It will take a big hundred from someone to do it, but there's a possibility. But if England go bang bang with a couple of wickets before the close it completely changes the complexion of the game.

Change of bowling, Anderson - likely with that second new ball in mind - is replaced by Ollie Robinson.

  5. NZ 179-3published at 68 overs

    Trail by 47 (F/O)

Leach has his hands on his head after drawing Nicholls forward and finding the inside edge.

The ball flicks off the pad but is short of Pope at bat-pad.

Maiden over from Anderson to Williamson.

The England man is still finding a hint of swing but with the second new ball available in 13 overs, how long until he is taken off and saved for that? One more over, perhaps?

Three quick wickets for England. You feel New Zealand have handed the momentum back to England having worked so hard to get themselves in a good position.

  9. NZ 177-3published at 66 overs

Tidy from Leach to get things started again after drinks. A couple of singles take New Zealand to within 50 of making England bat again.

That seems pretty much inevitable, it's more a matter of how many more they can add.

England have been made to work hard for the first time in the series. Jack Leach has got good reward for his efforts. A surprise to see Joe Root come into the attack and Tom Latham will be kicking himself for the manner of his dismissal.

Kane Williamson has made three centuries against England with a top score of 132 at Lord's. He averages 33.50 against England in 29 innings (excluding this one) - lower than against any other Test-playing nation.

  12. drinks break

    NZ 175-3published at 65 overs

    Williamson 15, Nicholls 1

Anderson strays onto Williamson's pads and a leg glance takes the ball away for four.

A full, in-swinger is driven to mid-off to end the over and it is time for everyone to take a breather. It's drinks.

  13. NZ 170-3published at 64 overs

With the extra half hour, we've got another hour and 15 minutes or so left in the day at the Basin Reserve.

The England fans will be pleased with how things are going and are given a nudge to liven up as the Barmy Army trumpeter strikes up.

Anderson holds a very tight line around Williamson's off stump throughout the over but the former Black Caps skipper is able to turn the last through square leg for one.

By this stage on the past couple of days, the rain had arrived and the players were off the field so it's great to see the sun shining in Wellington.

Whisper it but we might get a full day's play in here...

  16. NZ 167-3published at 62 overs

A wicket-maiden for Jack Leach as Henry Nicholls sees off the last couple of balls of the over.

Three wickets since tea and England have reasserted themselves in a position of dominance in this match.

Jack Leach's bowling in this innings: 5% full, 95% good length and 0% short. 21 overs, 4 maidens, went for 46 runs, took 2 wickets with an economy of 2.19.Image source, Getty Images

Jack Leach has been trying for that. He has been dreaming of that. That kind of delivery is exactly what you want as a left-arm spinner.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 61.4 overs

    Young b Leach 8 (NZ 167-3)

    That is a ripper!

Very similar to the ball to Williamson in his last over, Leach angles it in and finds some sharp turn to beat the bat and, this time, he hits off stump.

Will Young went back when he might have gone forward but it's a beauty from Leach nonetheless.

Tom Latham attempted three sweeps (all variants of it) in this Test and was dismissed twice. It's the fifth time an opener has been dismissed playing the sweep twice in a Test match (recorded data available since 2006):

    1) Sehwag v NZ, Napier, 2009

    2) Graeme Smith v Pakistan, Cape Town, 2013

    3) Khawaja v Pakistan, Dubai, 2018

    4) Khawaja v India, Delhi, 2023

    5) Latham - This Test

  20. NZ 167-2published at 61 overs

Typically accurate stuff from Anderson, the one time he strays onto the pads, Young clips through mid-wicket for three.

The England man is back on it next ball and probes around Williamson's off stump for the rest of the over.
