  1. NZ 121-0published at 45 overs

Ollie Robinson starts with a sloppy short delivery which is emphatically dispatched to the boundary by Tom Latham, but the England seamer finishes the over strongly.

A rare loose shot from Devon Conway as he induced to drive Ollie Robinson, and is beaten on the outside edge of his bat.

  2. dropped catch

Latham dropped on 63published at 44.0 overs

Whacked low and hard back towards Jack Leach's right boot. The England spinner gets his right hand on the ball but it slaps against his palm and comes out.

    A very tough chance.

  3. NZ 115-0published at 43.2 overs

Joe Root's three-over spell comes to an end as frontline spinner Jack Leach is called upon again by Ben Stokes.

He turns one into the body of Tom Latham which he fends off as Ollie Pope, under the lid at short leg, dives in vain.

    Little spell of pressure.

Next man in, Kane Williamson averages 63 at the Basin, with a top score of 242*. Only Ross Taylor has scored more on this ground.

  5. NZ 115-0published at 43 overs

New Zealand trail by 111 as Ollie Robinson responds to an expensive last over with a maiden this time around.

If these two can draw level with England's first innings score then we'll have a game on our hands. The pitch really is starting to flatten out, now.

Joe Root finds some nice turn away from Devon Conway, who needs one more run to bring up his half-century.

The New Zealand opener gets it off the fourth delivery of Root's over, with a punch through the covers.

The run map shows Devon Conway scored 50 with 1 six, 6 fours, 1 three, 2 twos, and 13 singles for New Zealand
  8. NZ 110-0published at 41 overs

That's followed by consecutive boundaries for Tom Latham as he first edges wide of the slips rather fortuitously, then pulls the ball rather more convincingly to the fence a ball later.

Meanwhile, Tom Latham has flicked Ollie Robinson off his hips for a couple to bring up a half-century.

Someone from crowd shouting at Stokes: "Why don't you bring yourself on?"

  11. NZ 100-0published at 39.2 overs

Joe Root is pushed through the covers by Tom Latham.

A century stand for the first wicket was not quite what Ben Stokes had in mind when he enforced the follow on.

  12. NZ 99-0published at 39 overs

Is James Anderson's 40-year-old body flagging a little here? He drops it short and wide and is pulled for four by Devon Conway.

The day after the first Test ended, I was in Mount Maunganui with my son, when we passed Ollie Pope. We stopped very briefly to chat (Pope was lovely to Freddie), then we moved on.

As we left, the conversation went like this:

    Freddie: “Is that your friend?”

Me: “Sort of. I know him from work.”

    Freddie: “What does he do?”

Me: “He plays cricket for England.”

Freddie: “Do you play cricket for England?”

    Me: “Erm. No.”

  14. NZ 94-0published at 38 overs

Joe Root finds some awkward lengths to Tom Latham with Ollie Pope primed and ready in a close catching position at silly mid-off in front. He gets off strike fourth ball and leaves Devon Conway to fend off the rest of the over.

And sure enough, here's Joe Root.

I think we might see the introduction of Joe Root. These two guys have been really disciplined in the way that they've played, they've not followed the balls that they've played and missed at.

They've held the line and you just accept as an opening batter that you might miss the odd one but if you have the discipline to hold the line then you're going to get the rub of the green sometimes as well.

Four dots from James Anderson to Devon Conway who has now gesticulated to someone down the ground. Anderson hit him on the pads with his final delivery but a stifled appeal fades away.

Jack Leach has a pensive look on his face. Devon Conway and Tom Latham both on 45 as they eye half-centuries.

Tom Latham brings up 5,000 Test runs with a single off James Anderson's penultimate delivery. The seventh Kiwi to reach the milestone.
