One thing to note is how the pitch has changed colour over the course of the match. From emerald green to the browner colour it is now. Essentially, it's getting batter for batting. A factor in England's thinking will have been the belief the pitch will be good enough for them to chase anything, if New Zealand do get ahead.

Jack Leach quickly through another over with that metronomic action of his. Just a single from it. New Zealand picking their moments to attack and defend.

For Rachel: Surely Stokes and Bairstow's 399 stand at Newlands in 2016 should be up there. And for women's cricket inspiration, practically anything by the Australian women's team. Arguably the strongest and best-drilled team in any sport, male or female. Although these England boys are starting to give them a run for their money.

Some funky field settings from Ben Stokes as England mix up their plans for Stuart Broad with a fielder in catching position on the leg side, behind square. A kind of leg gully.

Broad goes wide of the crease and angles it into Devon Conway, but his fourth delivery is too full and straight so and the New Zealand opener leans into the shot and times it beautifully for four between long-on and midwicket.

Plenty happening in Jack Leach's latest over.

New Zealand look like they are getting a handle on the left-arm spinner, as Tom Latham works his second ball through mid-wicket for four.

But a couple of balls later and Leach tosses it up and spins a big one past the bottom edge of Latham's bat as he attempts to cut off balance.

I've told my 8-year-old daughter about The Don failing in his final innings in Test cricket and missing out on a hundred average as an example of dealing with disappointment, life being unfair and cruel etc...

A beauty from Stuart Broad. Round the wicket he angles it into Tom Latham, drawing him into defending at delivery which just misses the edge. England's slip cordon applaud.

Meanwhile...A little earlier (22:43) Rachel Armitage got in touch asking what cricketing moments she should show her seven-year-old daughter to help foster a growing interest in the game. We've had a few more responses through.

  9. NZ 52-0published at 24 overs

New Zealand's openers finding a bit of momentum after that initial sticky patch straight after lunch. Three singles milked off Jack Leach as confidence grows for the home side.

  10. NZ 49-0published at 23 overs

    Stuart Broad chuntering to himself.

Devon Conway attempts to show a bit authority as he drives Stuart Broad through the covers for a crisp four.

The over is bookended by another four, with Tom Latham punishing a half volley which beats the dive of Ben Stokes at mid-off.

  11. NZ 41-0published at 22 overs

Jack Leach hitting some nice lengths and getting the ball to grip. He whistles through another over in double quick time.

Devon Conway breaks the run of 17 balls without scoring, clipping a gentle on drive to keep the strike off the last ball of the over.

    Thanks, Stephan. Sounds delightful.

England attempting to some pressure. Tom Latham defends and leaves well to Stuart Broad. Back-to-back maidens.

Lunch update. I went for the chicken and spaghetti, twice, not quite touching the heights of yesterday's lamb, when I had thirds.

A maiden to start from Jack Leach following the interval.

Stuart Broad has dropped a white bowling mark onto the turf and tapped it down with his size 12s. He has the ball in hand.

Jack Leach with the first over after lunch.

His first ball spins and catches the inside edge of Devon Conway's bat as he tentatively defends. The next delivery rags past the Kiwi opener's body down leg.

Promising signs for for the England left-arm spinner.

England's players are having a brief conflab on the boundary. New Zealand's openers are ready to go, as well.

We should be back under way shortly.

Awaiting an update from Stephan Shemilt on what the press have been given for lunch today at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

And whether he's bettered yesterday's number of plates of food. Four servings of lamb today, Stephan? That would be insane.

Given the situation of the game the one thing New Zealand fans wanted to see was some resistance. They've had the odd bit of good fortune. I think England's bowling has been okay, albeit with a little bit of tetchiness. It's fine margins.

Peter John Watson: I don't think New Zealand will mind being made to follow-on. It's the only way they can get anything from this match. If England had batted again, there would be no way to get back into the game.

Okay, back to the Test match.

An intriguing afternoon ahead. New Zealand will continue to grind it out. A couple of wickets for England and they will smell blood.
