    Champions yet again.

  3. 'A special effort'published at 16:38 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

Australia captain Meg Lanning: "It is a pretty special effort. All the teams came hard at us but to be able to perform throughout the tournament I am super proud.

"We thought it was a good score but we'd have to bowl well. The wicket probably didn't play as well as the semi-final so we wanted to keep the stumps in play. The powerplay set the tone.

"It was about enjoying the opportunity and focus on what we're doing. It was a fantastic occasion but we've got some great experience in the group and it was about focussing on what we can do.

"We've been able to get out and see what this beautiful country has to offer and the people have been super friendly. It's been a great tournament.

"It is a special group. Not just the players, but the support staff, who put in a lot of work behind the scenes. They allow us to just go out and play our cricket. To have all the support from back home and here has been amazing and we certainly feel it."

  5. 'We can be proud of what we've done'published at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

South African's skipper Sune Luus: "It's been absolutely amazing to play in our home ground with so many people watching and the support. We've never imagined being in the final and the ground being filled too. Thank you Newlands.

"If you told me before the game that Australia got 157 I would've taken it. They have a brilliant bowling and batting attack. We can be proud of what we've done.

"There's no going backwards it's exciting for the coming months. I hope there's more developments, with more schools making girls play cricket and more girls coming through.

"Congratulations [to Australia]. You guys are annoying. You have been inspiring the world of cricket for so long and you show your class again time and time again.

"I think we've set the platform today. We can't go backwards and the pressure is on to keep growing the sport."

The tournament has been fantastic, there are still thousands of people here cheering on South Africa as they get their runners-up medals.

The standard of cricket in the semi-finals and final has been brilliant. I think we've seen improvements from some teams, I think Pakistan have been the most improved but then they lost form as the tournament went on.

Teams are getting closer, although I do fear the top three teams are getting further away from anyone else.

What gets me is how their players stay motivated. Meg Lanning the captain has five World Cups and it all just seems so easy. The standards that they set themselves, it's remarkable to watch them go about their business.

I think it is time we see the rest of the world catch up. England and India aren't too far off. It's a shame England didn't get to the final.

But it's the consistency of them, it's not just the one-off games. They're winning series and tournaments and it just never stops. They've only lost once all year and that was in a Super Over.

They have to be the greatest sporting side in the world right now.

When Jess Jonassen spoke to me on the No Balls podcast they said she didn't treat it like a team, they treat it like a business.

It's always a might Australia lose. But actually it's just by chance at the moment. I firmly believe England would have had the best chance to beating Australia, but they got knocked out in the semi-finals. Australia didn't.

  11. 'Proud is an understatement'published at 16:25 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

Player of the tournament Australia's Ashleigh Gardner: "We have been longing for this moment. Today showed that we were not in winning positions throughout this tournament.

"Words can't describe how proud I am of this group. We talk about evolving as individuals and growing the game globally. As a team we are doing that.

"Proud is an understatement and it's so much fun playing cricket for your country. I am very fortunate to be part of this side and it's something that later in life I will be very proud of."

  13. 'It was a tough day'published at 16:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt: "It's been such an incredible tournament. It's my home ground and I live just down the road from here.

"It was a tough day. Firstly, it was so special for the fans to come out and fill the stadium. We didn't get off to a great start with the bat and it was always hard to make up for it in the back end.

"You could hear every single cheer and it's something I've never experienced, its been really special.

"I could do this everyday, it was a very cool experience and for our team to take it one further is great, we've had a good tournament as a group."

Not many are going to argue with that decision.

10 wickets and 110 runs at 36.66 across six matches.

  15. 'A special group of girls'published at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

Player of the match Beth Mooney: "It's been incredible being here in South Africa and playing in an outstanding ground like this it's really special.

"I'm glad I can fake it that much because I certainly wasn't calm and collected out there!

"It was a really tough wicket, but never judge a wicket until both teams have batted on it, Every did a really good job.

"I was disappointed with my output in the first couple of games but I knew I could turn it around.

"I think we'll just enjoy the moment with each other, It's a very special group and the supporter staff are amazing. They're a special group of girls."

  16. 'Incredible atmosphere'published at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry: "Amazing game. Huge thank you to the crowd for creating an incredible atmosphere. I know they weren't always for us but to have the opportunity to be part of that, it was fun to be a part of it.

"It [their performance] was up and down at times, particularly in our bowling innings. Laura Wolvaardt played exceptionally well and put them in the hunt, building momentum. Up until we broke that partnership it was feeling pretty tense."

  18. 'South Africa took it right to then end'published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

Australia's Jess Jonassen: "You can't go into the World Cup thinking you won't lift the trophy. South Africa took it right to then end. The crowd was amazing and it was special to play in front of them.

"I thought once I was out at the start of the tournament, that was it and I was going to be up on the sidelines. I'm relishing the opportunity to be out here and my partner in the crowd which makes it extra special.

"We've gone sightseeing, South Africa is a very beautiful nation and we're very lucky to be over here."

Had South Africa have got 15 more in the powerplay, who knows?

When you start with a run-rate of 7.5 it's more than a run a ball. You can't just eat up dots.
