  1. Under way at Grace Roadpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Leics v Yorks

Even amid the rain showers there must be some buzz around Grace Road today after the Foxes’ euphoric victory in the One Day Cup final.

They will be looking to cash in on the feelgood factor after winning the toss and sticking in Yorkshire.

It’s Chris Wright to open up in his final home game with Leicestershire after six seasons with the Flying Foxes. Adam Lyth to face.

  2. Latest from New Roadpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

Worcestershire v Durham - start delayed

There is a break in the weather at Worcester. The umpires plan to take another look at 3pm.

The home side will presumably be the more frustrated. Durham only need five points to be sure of the Division Two title

    Somerset 37-0 v Kent

First bowling change for Kent, who bring Joey Evison on to bowl in place of Michael Hogan from the River End.

    He starts with a maiden.

    Michael Hogan has changed ends.

His second ball takes the inside edge of Tom Lammonby's bat and the ball runs away to fine leg for one.

Tom Abell is well forward to block the next four balls and then gets a single to keep the strike.

Kent have applied the brakes to this Somerset innings but no chances created so far.

    Essex 97-4 v Hants

A Kyle Abbott maiden to Matt Critchley is followed by five dot balls from Liam Dawson to Paul Walter before the Essex batter takes a single to get off the mark.

A bit of pressure on the second-placed home side at the moment.

  5. New start time at Grace Roadpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Leics v Yorks

The 14:30 start time has been brought forward by 10 minutes.

We now go at 14:20 so play is imminent.

  6. Play to start at 14:30 BSTpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Leics v Yorks

After one false dawn, the covers are off and the umpires have another start time for us at Grace Road.

Play had been due at 13:40 but moments before the players were due to take the field, the rain reappeared.

Fingers crossed no more showers blow in on the strong winds sweeping the East Midlands. 54 overs are now scheduled for the day.

  7. Somerset off to flying startpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Somerset 35-0 v Kent

The pitch may be green but the bowling radar is a little awry.

Michael Hogan bowls into Tom Abell's leg stump and the Somerset captain picks up three runs clipped through square.

He gets four with a thick edge which guides the ball wide of fourth slip and through to third man.

Tom Lammonby picks up successive boundaries with four driven down the ground and four more off a thick edge safely through to third man off Bhuiyan Arafat.

Four more driven through deep backward point off a thick edge.

A bit streaky but this is a very bright start for the hosts on a gloomy September day.

35 runs in the first six overs.

Liam Dawson gets the line right this time and there is just enough turn to find the edge of Dan Lawrence's bat.

It's an easy catch for James Vince at first slip and suddenly, having been 82-2, things are looking a bit shaky for Essex.

Having started this game 18 points Surrey, it is essential that they manage a batting point or three.

  9. Postpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Essex 96-3 v Hants

Dan Lawrence is beaten by a fine delivery from Kyle Abbott at the end of a maiden over by the Hampshire paceman.

Lawrence has faced 100 balls for his 28 not out and Essex need him to go on and make a big score, given their position in the title race.

Liam Dawson will bowl the next over and Lawrence sweeps his third ball for four following a Matt Critchley single.

The next ball is also off line and the sweep is finer, forcing the fielder at leg slip to take evasive action as it bounces past him and runs away to the rope.

  10. Postpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Somerset 15-0 v Kent

Another shout from Michael Hogan for LBW, this time against Tom Abell, but that's going down leg and Somerset pick up a leg bye.

Lammonby drives through the off side for one.

Bhuiyan Arafat bowls a full length with four slips in and that's a gorgeous drive down the ground by Tom Lammonby for four.

Steady start from Somerset, who are making light of a green pitch thus far.

  11. Postpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Somerset 9-0 v Kent

Three slips in for the veteran seamer Michael Hogan, who raps Tom Lammonby on the pad first ball and an LBW shout is turned down.

He took seven wickets against Notts at Canterbury last week.

Lammonby picks up two runs, cutting a short ball from Hogan through the off side.

A single off the fifth ball and Tom Abell defends.

Bhuiyan Arafat will bowl the next over, from around the wicket.

He pushes the ball wide of off stump and Lammonby drives through cover for four runs.

    Essex 82-3 v Hants

    Disappointment for Essex.

Kyle Abbott begins a new over and the home skipper tries to drive but slices to third slip where James Vince takes the catch moving to his left to earn a first bowling point for Hampshire.

Westley and Dan Lawrence - who has now been joined by Matt Critchley, one of three Essex players to receive their county caps at lunchtime (see below) - put on 64 for the third wicket.

  13. Play begins at Tauntonpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Somerset 0-0 v Kent

    Expect tough batting conditions here.

This is a very green square underneath gloomy overheads.

Tom Lammonby will open the innings with his captain, Tom Abell.

Michael Hogan will bowl to Lammonby.

Not surprising, given the green surface.

Three changes to the Kentish attack that played in the last round.

Jas Singh and Arafat Bhuiyan come in for spinners Aron Nijjar and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Marcus O'Riordan replaces seamer Nathan Gilchrist.

Joe Denly returns to the batting line-up in place of Zak Crawley.

Three changes to the Somerset XI who played in Southampton last week.

Lewis Goldsworthy and Josh Davey come in for Ben Green and Shoaib Bashir.

The free-scoring Tom Banton is in for Sean Dickson.

Keith Barker strays onto Tom Westley's pads and the Essex captain clips it away for four to reach 50 off 99 balls.

That was the ninth boundary of his innings and he will be hoping to convert this into a fourth century of the season.

  16. Division Two updatepublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

Still no play at New Road and Derby because of rain.

Worcestershire are, though, hoping to have an inspection "in due course" and that "the forecast is looking brighter for this afternoon".

Meanwhile, having had the toss at Grace Road, it is now raining again there, so the start of play must wait.

    Surrey v Northants 82-2

Northants were just starting to pick up the tempo with successive fours, both steered wide of the slip cordon by Hassan Azad off the bowling of Kemar Roach.

But now the weather has intervened and the overs are coming on.

    Frustration for both sides.

    Essex 75-2 v Hants

Was that a chance? Did it carry? Tom Westley flashes at an angled ball from Keith Barker but Fletcha Middleton can't take it cleanly at backward point.

Westley remains on 46 not out and there is a bit of rain in the air.

    Middx 74-5 v Warwicks

The rain has arrived at Lord's.

Nothing much to write home about, but with heavier stuff forecast, the umpires take the players off in the 30th over and the hover cover rumbles into operation.

I can't imagine the Middlesex men will mind much.

    Surrey v Northants 73-2

Karun Nair is living a charmed life this afternoon as Dan Worrall repeatedly gets the ball to bounce and leave the batter outside off.

Just one run scored by Northants since lunch.

The fourth ball is banged in short and Nair swings back and away from the line.

    Another maiden for Worrall.
