Dan Worrall returns at the Vauxhall End.

The first ball of his second spell is gently pushed through cover by Karun Nair for four.

Worrall probes away outside off... and his fifth ball is edged and dropped by Jamie Overton at second slip!

The ball seemed to be climbing on him somewhat as he spilled it at chest height.

Nair has a life on 11.

    Essex 65-2 v Hants

Tom Westley repeats the previous stroke which brought him a boundary off Liam Dawson, with the same result and is 45 not out.

BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James says that because of the range of attacking shots these days, it is becoming much harder for spinners - "even the good ones".

    Surrey v Northants 61-2

Shot! Karun Nair picks up his first boundary with a careful, late steer wide of third slip down to third man for four.

He gets away with a couple more runs in the same region, this time off a thick edge.

Northants would be pleased to get to lunch only two down after a stern test from the Surrey attack, despite the injury to Jamie Overton - who was briefly off the field with a side injury in his third over.

    Did I speak too soon?

A loose flashing shot from John Simpson who under-edges a straight Ed Barnard delivery to Michael Burgess.

The wicketkeeper takes a smart catch down low and Warwicks are one wicket away from a second bonus point this morning.

How long to lunch the Middlesex batters ask.

  6. Hope of play at Taunton?published at 12:16 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx 55-4 v Warwicks

Warwickshire were bowled out for 60 in the reverse fixture at Edgbaston back in July as Middlesex recorded one of their three Championship wins this season.

The Bears bowlers are unlikely to better that without the most dramatic of batting collapses, but they are exacting a modicum of revenge on the first morning.

A leg bye taken by new man John Simpson off Craig Miles ends a run of 14 dot balls.

  8. Postpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

Jordan Clark almost draws Hassan Azad into a drive outside off, as the opener pulls the bat inside the line at the last moment.

He survives the over on 23 off 75 balls.

Indian batter Karun Nair is off the mark with a front foot nudge to backward square leg off Tom Lawes.

Single to Azad off the second ball.

Karun Nair sees out the over. He has a a first-class batting average of 49 in 86 matches and Northants will need every bit of his experience here today.

With no prospect of play at a gloomy and damp Taunton this morning, lunch was taken at midday.

    Surrey v Northants 51-2

Tom Lawes dismisses Luke ProcterImage source, Rex Features

Peach of a ball from Tom Lawes.

He gets the ball to bounce and leave Luke Procter, who is stuck on the crease, outside off stump.

The ball flies off the outside edge and is comfortably taken at chest height by Jamie Overton at second slip, who recently got back on the field after appearing to sustain a hip injury while bowling this morning.

    Karun Nair will bat next.

    Essex 49-2 v Hampshire

Liam Dawson finds a little bit of spin but the ball takes the shoulder of Tom Westley's bat and runs away for two runs.

Encouraging for Hampshire - but they will have to face Simon Harmer in the fourth innings....

  14. wicket

WICKET Higgins b Barnard 7published at 12:03 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx 49-4 v Warwicks

Ryan Higgins is bowledImage source, Rex Features

It's unravelling for the hosts at Lord's.

Ryan Higgins smashes a lovely cover drive off an over-pitched Ed Barnard ball, but is cleaned up by the next delivery.

More late movement down the hill from the Nursery end, Higgins plays down the wrong line and loses his off stump. It may have kept a little low.

The Bears attack have been relentless.

  15. Postpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Surrey v Northants 51-1

Surrey might have hoped for more than one wicket at this stage, but Northants have been kept in check nonetheless - with a scoring rate below three an over.

Jordan Clark angles the ball across Luke Procter and beats the Northants captain outside off stump.

Procter gets away with a nudge to long leg off the next ball.

More bounce and movement for Clark, who beats Hassan Azad outside off.

The last ball is short, targeting the upper body and Azad is on the deck, swaying out of the way.

  16. Postpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Essex 43-2 v Hants

This has been a very positive innings so far by Essex skipper Tom Westley. Anything off line or erring in length and he has seized on it.

The second ball of Liam Dawson's latest over is on leg stump and Westley leans forward before flicking it fine for four.

He is now 33 not out, with Dan Lawrence on six at the other end.

    Surrey v Northants 50-1

Jordan Clark is losing his radar periodically here and it takes a fine diving stop from keeper Ben Foakes to stop a wild delivery speared down the leg side.

Tom Lawes continues at the Vauxhall End and the first ball of his second over is tucked away to fine leg for a single to take Northants to 50 in the 20th over.

A much better off stump line from Lawes for the rest of the over and Hassan Azad solidly defends on the front foot.

  18. wicket

WICKET Davies b Miles 11published at 11:51 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx 36-3 v Warwicks

Jack Davies is bowledImage source, Rex Features

Kent will be enjoying this as their relegation rivals lose a third wicket of the morning.

Craig Miles angles one in from around the wicket to Jack Davies.

It straightens and beats the forward push of Davies who looks back to see his off stump cartwheeling out of the ground.

A good toss to win and the Warwickshire bowlers have taken full advantage.

    Essex 35-2 v Hampshire

Just 16 overs bowled at Chelmsford, but Hampshire call up Liam Dawson for some left-arm spin.

He'll have good memories of this ground, having taken 7-68 in the second innings of last year's corresponding fixture, for match figures of 10-139 - though that was played in June.

A tidy start by Dawson with just one run added by Dan Lawrence.

  20. Postpublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Surrey v Northants 48-1

An expansive cover drive from Luke Procter off Jordan Clark brings four more runs to Northants.

A stylish way to get off the mark.

The next two balls yield a leg bye and a wide.

Tom Lawes replaces the injured Jamie Overton in the Surrey attack at the other end.

He angles the ball across Luke Procter, who leaves.

The fourth ball is ack of a length on the leg side and nudged away for one.
