    Northants 369 v Essex 66-3

Jack White is causing Tom Westley some problems here, as the Essex captain plays and misses outside off, then misses a ball that moves the other way and survives an LBW shout.

Northants captain Luke Procter has brought himself on to bowl - and his third ball misses the outside edge as Matt Critchley tries to block.

Procter changes his line, bowling wider of off and Critchley leaves.

    Notts v Middlesex 349-7

While Kent were losing a wicket, Middesex were finding the ropes four times in seven deliveries, with one of the others seeing Jayant Yadav edging an inch short of Calvin Harrison at slip.

But now Yadav has gone.... trapped by Jake Ball playing across the line. No arguments.

One shy of the third batting bonus point after a vital stand of 86.

Toby Roland-Jones is the new man.

WICKET Leaning b Morley 34published at 14:08 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Kent 138-3 v Lancashire 327

Spinner Jack Morley has bowled the Kent skipper, who came forward in defence but saw the ball slide past the outside edge to kiss off stump and dislodge the bails.

    Kent are three down.

Joe Denly is the new man, joining Ben Compton who is on 44.

    Hants 219 v Surrey 141-6

Liam Dawson is bowling with great guile and control for Hampshire.

He has bowled eight maidens out of 20 overs, taking 3-26.

Kyle Abbott replaces James Fuller at the other end and Cameron Steel gets a single via the inside edge off the fourth ball.

The last ball jags back in off the seam and that's the tightest of leaves by Jordan Clark.

  5. Postpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Kent 129-2 v Lancashire 327

Ben Compton has found the ropes in consecutive overs, most recently opening the face delightfully to guide Jack Morley down to the third man fence to move to 42.

Jack Leaning is on 29 at the other end.

Three an over will do Kent. 69 overs remaining for them to amass bonus points.

  6. Postpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 62-3

Tom Westley leaves the other Tom (Taylor) outside off stump.

Change of bowling at the other end as Jack White replaces Ben Sanderson.

Worryingly, the forecast here is being described on BBC Radio Northampton as "downgraded" with showers possible in a few minutes.

White's fourth ball is driven through mid wicket for four.

A single to backward square leg as the ball is in the air briefly but lands safely.

The last ball is edged by Tom Westley, but it lands just short of third slip.

Captain Will Rhodes and Alex Davies are digging in for Warwickshire against Somerset. The Bears are 88-2 in reply to Somerset's 215 all out.

In Division Two, Sussex opener Ali Orr has gone to fifty in his side's second innings against Gloucestershire. They're 90-1 and leading by 97.

Only one over was possible after lunch at Headingley before the players went off for bad light. Yorkshire are 24-0 replying to Worcestershire's 389 all out.

At Sophia Gardens it's been an on-off day two so far. Currently they're on and Derbyshire are 363-5 in their first innings.

    Hants 219 v Surrey 139-6

James Fuller bowls a short one to Cameron Steel who is on the back foot, pushing the ball through the off side for one.

He's in a bit of trouble against the spin of Liam Dawson at the other end, forward and pushing the ball just short of mid wicket.

    Maiden over.

    Notts v Middlesex 323-6

The Indian Test centurion is now halfway to a Championship ton and is repaying the faith in his overseas signing in spades.

A thick edge off Jake Ball down to third brings up his first half-century in England from 58 balls with seven fours.

He had scored only 12 runs in his previous three Middlesex knocks combined, and only 15 in his last five first class innings after a couple more low scores in India before his arrival.

    A priceless contribution.

    Durham 457-8 dec v Leics 96-6

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

I am not sure how much more play we will see this afternoon. The floodlights have been on for hours. The rain has arrived. We have slate grey skies. It all looks very end of season.

There's a touch of that in this Leicestershire batting performance as well, because they are six down and don't look long for this world.

Their former player Ben Raine took the first four wickets. He bowled Rishi Patel (7) and Sam Evans (22) before Umar Amin (2) and Louis Kimber (0) fell in consecutive balls a little later, both lbw.

Sri Lankan left-armer Vishwa Fernando then got his first wickets for Durham, both in the same over as Harry Swindells lost his middle stump, chopping on when on eight. Lewis Hill was then given out lbw for 25 to a ball which I thought he'd played onto his front foot.

The umpire Rob Bailey thought otherwise. Hill looked stunned to be given out and kicked the boundary sponge in anger as he walked off the field. He may yet face the consequences for that.

    Kent 114-2 v Lancashire 327

Ben Compton whips one inches away from the fingers of Matty Hurst at forward short leg. The youngster became the first Lancashire player EVER to make unbeaten fifties in his first two innings for the Red Rose. He's got plenty of catching prowess as a keeper.

    Northants 369 v Essex 52-3

Now then - can Essex get out of the mire and rack up some batting points here?

Matt Critchley plays and misses Ben Sanderson outside off but he's got hold of the fifth ball, guiding it safely through to third man with soft hands on the front foot for four.

That's the Essex 50 in the 16th over.

  13. new ball

New ball taken by Nottspublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Notts v Middlesex 314-6

Three fours in the final over with the old ball from Calvin Harrison, which cost 14 in total, have made Steven Mullaney's mind up.

314-6. Only 36 shy of a third batting point to match Kent's three bowling points secured on day one.

Can they hald Middlesex's momentum with the new cherry?

Brett Hutton has ball in hand.

  14. SECOND BATTING POINT FOR MIDDLESEXpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Notts v Middlesex 300-6

Middlesex have doubled their tally for the entire season today. Jayant Yadav works Matt Montgomery's spin off his pads for a single to bring it up. He has 39. Ryan Higgins has 110.

79 overs gone. 31 in which to score more runs. One until Notts can take a new ball.

    Hants 219 v Surrey 135-6

The ship is sinking. But Surrey can still get back into this game, which they only need to draw to win the Championship of 2023.

Will Jacks is back in his crease, squared up and missing a ball from James Fuller.

    Plumb.

A glimmer of hope for Essex, who can still pip Surrey to the title if they recover at Wantage Road and score 400-plus.

    Jordan Clark is in next.

    Over to you, Mark Church:

"300 is looking a bit of a way off now. They need a partnership."

    Notts v Middlesex 292-6

The visitors are into the nervous 290s... a second batting bonus point is tantalisingly close. It would take them within two points of Kent in the live Division One table.

Ryan Higgins and Jayant Yadav have put on an unbroken half-century for the seventh wicket.

Middlesex have produced their best batting performance of the season for when it matters most.

    Hants 219 v Surrey 135-5

Sai Sudharsan is playing a really good hand for Surrey here, as he picks up three more off Liam Dawson with a wristy stroke through extra cover.

Out! Absolute jaffa from Liam Dawson which spits up and bounces sharply out of the rough.

So sorry. Commentator's curse. Really nothing he could've done about that, bar hope to miss it.

The ball loops up to Fletcha Middleton off the inside edge and pad, who takes it at short leg.

It's time for Cameron Steel to have a bat.

Will WIlliams finds the outside edge of Jack Leaning's bat but the ball drops a foot short of second slip.

Teeth collectively sucked around the cordon.

Leaning has 24 from 21 balls which is not far off Ben Compton's 28 from 109.

WICKET Lawrence c McManus b Sanderson 12published at 13:33 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 39-3

Great news for Surrey and a nightmare for Essex.

Just a bit of bounce and away movement from Ben Sanderson outside off and Dan Lawrence is leaden-footed, driving and edging the ball to keeper Lewis McManus.

Northants have a bowling point and Essex are in danger of fading fast.

They need a minimum of 400 and four batting bonus points otherwise Surrey are champions.

Will Jacks gets his first boundary on the session with a four pulled high over mid wicket off Hampshire spinner Liam Dawson.

Great shot, waiting in the crease and swinging with a perfect arc outside off stump.
