  1. 6 runs

Jacks on the attackpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Hants 214 v Surrey 103-4

    What...a...shot.

Ian Holland bowls a bit short and Will Jacks waits in his crease, swinging the bowler with aplomb over square leg for a maximum.

A stylish way for Surrey to pass 100 in the 49th over.

Lunch is at 12.40 here in a session that has been extended after time lost to the wretched autumn weather on Day One.

  2. wicket

    WICKET Bell-Drummond c Jennings b Morley 3published at 12:31 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Kent 82-2 v Lancashire 327

Spinner Jack Morley is into the attack and finds the edge of Daniel Bell-Drummond's bat to start his second over, offering Keaton Jennings a far more routine slip catch in the bread basket.

Skipper Jack Leaning is the new batter. How Kent need him to rise to the occasion with a big, and long, contribution here.

  3. wicket

WICKET Cook b Sanderson 6published at 12:29 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 23-2

    It's the big wicket... Huge.

Ben Sanderson gets one to jag in off the seam and Sir Alastair Cook loses his off peg.

Dan Lawrence is in next for Essex.

  4. Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 23-1

Tom Westley is off the mark in style as the Essex captain is forward, clipping Jack White off his pads in front of square for four runs.

Time for at least a couple more overs here before lunch.

  5. MIDDLESEX PULL ONE BACKpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Notts v Middlesex 251-6

Jayant Yadav carves Jake Ball away for four to bring up the first batting bonus point in the 69th over.

That's still a 3-1 lead for Kent in terms of points gained this week, and Kent had a one-point lead to start the round, but it's something to build on for Middlesex.

  6. wicket

WICKET Foakes lbw b Dawson 6published at 12:23 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Hants 219 v Surrey 96-4

    Now then...

A 53-ball grind from Ben Foakes is over, as the keeper plays back to Liam Dawson...

The ball spins back and hits him in front of all three.

Now it's time for Will Jacks to have a bat having returned from England duty.

  7. Postpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Notts v Middlesex 247-6

Ryan Higgins is eyeing the Trent Bridge track like a drunk man looks at a magician.

He's had one keep very low indeed and beat him, and keeper Tom Moores, and later in the over he plays a shot down the track one-handed after the ball spits up at him off a length.

Middlesex won't mind that too much as they will appreciate the help when it comes to bowling. Winning the match will ensure the best points haul of all.

They are three away from a batting bonus point as it is.

  8. Postpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 19-1

Sir Alastair Cook picks up his first boundary, driving Ben Sanderson with a lovely flourish of the bat through cover for four.

Quality shot from a quality player.

  9. 50 runs

for Sai Sudharsanpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Hants 219 v Surrey 88-3

He's played solidly for his maiden 50 for the club, with some very confident sweep shots earlier in his innings.

He reaches the landmark off exactly 100 balls with his seventh four, driving Ian Holland through the off side.

  10. wicket

WICKET Browne c McManus b Sanderson 13published at 12:16 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 14-1

Early strike for Northants and the early Essex charge has been put in check.

Nick Browne aims an expansive drive outside off, edging Ben Sanderson to Northants keeper Lewis McManus.

Tom Westley is in at three for Essex.

  11. wicket

WICKET de Caires c Moores b Hutton 12published at 12:15 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Notts v Middlesex 241-6

Brett Hutton gets his man. He finds a faint edge through to Tom Moores and Middlesex have lost another wicket. It has been coming...

Jayant Yadav is the new man. The visitors are still nine shy of their first batting bonus point with 43 overs remaining to amass them.

  12. Postpublished at 12:14 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Notts v Middlesex 241-5

Ryan Higgins has his heart in his mouth, he plays and misses at one from Brett Hutton and is whacked on the pads on 91 but the finger stays down. Maybe just outside the line.

Later in the over Josh de Caires draws another yelp but this time it looks like it's come off an inside edge.

    Pressure building.

  13. Bright start for Essexpublished at 12:14 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 13-0

Essex can't control proceedings with title rivals Surrey at Southampton but goodness me, they've charged out of the blocks here.

Nick Browne is off the mark third ball to Ben Sanderson, tucking a leg side ball away to fine leg for four.

The opener gets two more boundaries off Jack White at the other end, one deflected down to fine leg and one driven off the back foot through the off side.

  14. Postpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Hants 219 v Surrey 84-3

Ben Foakes gets an outside edge off Ian Holland and the ball runs away wide of slip and down to third man for four.

More frustration for Hampshire, who are almost certainly without the services of Mohammad Abbas for the rest of the innings as the bowler appears to have a back injury which restricted his mobility in the field earlier.

Sai Sudharsan is forward to Liam Dawson, pushing the spinner through cover for one.

  15. Postpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Kent 66-1 v Lancashire 327

Lancashire do like an appeal. Very vocal in the field.

They try their luck after an off-balance Daniel Bell-Drummond is thumped on the pads by George Balderson but more in hope than expectation. Might have been too high, going down leg and possibly pitching outside the line too.

A suffocating spell for Kent to negotiate this.

  16. Essex batting at Northamptonpublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 0-0

A pleasant ovation for Sir Alastair Cook, who may well be making his last appearance at this ground as a first-class player.

He averages 76 at Wantage road, you know.

    He's joined by Nick Browne.

Ben Sanderson has four slips and he'll get the innings started, bowling to Browne.

  17. Postpublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Hants 219 v Surrey 79-3

Ian Holland is in the attack and a short ball is cut by Ben Foakes just past backward point for his first runs off 36 balls. Two runs.

Sai Sudharsan sweeps Liam Dawson from outside off behind square for four runs.

He's really getting into his stride here.

Chance goes down! Sudharsan is on the back foot and the ball flies off the face of the bat just marginally short of forward short leg.

Half chance, really. That would've been an absolute stunner.

  18. Elsewhere...published at 11:55 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

Somerset seamer Lewis Gregory took just four balls to dismiss Warwickshire opener Kraigg Brathwaite without scoring. The Bears are now 24-1 in reply to Somerset's 215 all out.

In Division Two, champions Durham declared on 475-8 against Leicestershire. Ben Raine has just picked up a wicket for the hosts at Chester-le-Street, bowling Rishi Patel. The Foxes are 22-1.

Sussex bowled out Gloucestershire for 195 to earn a first-innings lead of seven - they've just begun their second innings.

Worcestershire, safe in the knowledge they won promotion earlier, have moved to 376-7 at Yorkshire - Ben Allison has gone to a career-best 73 not out.

And Storm Agnes has spun its way into Cardiff - they're off for rain between Glamorgan and Derbyshire with the visitors on 316-3.

  19. wicket

WICKET White c Cook b Porter 0published at 11:54 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex

It's a two-ball duck for the Northants number 11, who is stuck on the crease, fencing a ball from Jamie Porter to Sir Alastair Cook at first slip.

    Good, low catch.

Jamie Porter finishes with 4-105 and Essex will be batting in 10 minutes.

Justin Broad leaves the field unbeaten on 56.

  20. Postpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Hants 219 v Surrey 71-3

Injury woes for Surrey too, as word is out that Tom Lawes will play no further part in this match.

A pity as he bowled superbly to take 5-27 for the Division One leaders on Day One.

Kyle Abbott hones in on the off stump of Ben Foakes who defends.

    The keeper-batsman has 0 from 28 balls.
