  1. Lunch at the Ageas Bowlpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 67-2 v Surrey 209

Anther shower takes them off a fraction early on the south coast.

There have been looks up towards the dressing room for the past half hour from the Surrey fielders and they walk off with broad grins and handshakes.

They have done it! County Champions again.

A couple of wickets this morning - one for Dan Worrall, one for Will Jacks - can they go on and finish the season with victory?

  2. Postpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Essex 0-0 f/o trail Northants by 158

Oh I stand corrected, we have more play at Wantage Road before lunch.

And Northants have enforced the follow-on with a lead of 158 and 74 overs in their legs.

So Alastair Cook taking guard perhaps for one final time.

  3. Lunch at Canterburypublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 447-8 v Lancashire 327

Kent go into lunch still batting, so that is mission accomplished from their point of view.

Joe Denly was the rock with his 136, but the loss of four wickets for 17 runs has slowed their progress a touch.

However, with a lead of 120, they are in an excellent position in this game.

  4. Postpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 172-3 v Middlesex 366

This is more like it from Jayant Yadav as he gets some appreciable turn from the bowlers' footmarks.

He has Ben Slater groping outside his off-stump and he is fortunate not to get a nick.

    There it is!

Tom Taylor is full and straight and too quick for Jamie Porter who loses his leg stump.

Essex needed four batting points to keep the title race alive but they haven't managed even one.

    Surrey are champions once again!

They'll take lunch now at Wantage Road and it'll be rather sombre around the Essex dining tables.

  6. Postpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 172-3 v Middlesex 366

Middlesex have turned to the occasional leg-breaks of Sam Robson.

Is this a desperate move or something inspired from Toby Roland-Jones.

He gives up two singles from his opening six balls.

  7. wicket

WICKET Yadav c Zaib b Keogh 24published at 12:21 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 210-9

This didn't seem like it would last and indeed Umesh Yadav has holed out.

Takes a swing at Rob Keogh aiming at the longer side of the ground and is easily taken at deep midwicket.

Northants are one wicket away from handing the title to Surrey.

  8. Resumption in West Endpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 46-2 v Surrey 209

Only a short delay at the Ageas.

The sun is now out and James Vince plays with the turn to flick Will Jacks to fine leg for four.

  9. wicket

WICKET Gilchrist b Balderson 0published at 12:14 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 431-8 v Lancashire 327

Absolutely out! Middle peg on the floor.

Nathan Gilchrist failed to score off his first 10 balls and has his middle stump flattened off his 11th.

A fourth wicket for George Balderson and a third this morning. He is having a very good season.

  10. wicket

WICKET Clarke lbw b Yadav 66published at 12:13 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 169-3 v Middlesex 366

Boy did Middlesex need this one!

Joe Clarke tries to work one to leg, misses it and is given out LBW. A pity for Clarke when he was going nicely, but relief for Middlesex.

A first wicket for Jayant Yadav. They need a good few more.

  11. Elsewhere...published at 12:04 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

It's been a good morning for Somerset's bowlers at Edgbaston. They've picked up three wickets to leave Warwickshire 175-6, although Ed Barnard and Danny Briggs have put on a useful stand of 28.

In Division Two, Sussex batter Tom Alsop has been dismissed for 79 but they're still in complete control against Gloucestershire. The hosts are 320-4 and leading by 327.

At Headingley Yorkshire are 67-2 against Worcestershire with both openers, Adam Lyth and Fin Bean, gone. Yorkshire trail by 322.

Glamorgan have started well replying to Derbyshire's 450-8 declared. They're 90-1 in Cardiff.

And an early lunch is being taken at Chester-le-Street where it's still quite damp and murky.

  12. wicket

WICKET Evison b Hartley 14published at 12:04 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 428-7 v Lancashire 327

As the Kent lead creeps into three figures, they lose a third wicket of the session.

Joey Evison is beaten by a beauty from left-armer Tom Hartley, which turns appreciably.

With two spinners in their line-up, Kent won't mind seeing that at all.

  13. wicket

WICKET Harmer lbw b Procter 4published at 12:03 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 186-8

Not even Simon Harmer can save Essex now.

He got off the mark with a lovely straight punch off Luke Procter.

But the Northants captain quickly gets his man.

Slightly wider on the crease, on a better length, he nips one in to beat the inside edge.

At the other end, Umesh Yadav has swung Jack White for six over midwicket but his method doesn't look too sustainable.

  14. wicket

WICKET Westley c McManus b Procter 49published at 11:52 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 165-7

A massive wicket! And probably a fatal one for Essex.

Having taken that catch, Luke Procter then gets one to hold its line a fraction from just outside off stump.

Tom Westley is drawn into playing and gets a feather edge behind.

Surely no way to 400 for Essex now which would give Surrey the title.

  15. 6 runs

Postpublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 160-2 v Middlesex 366

Joe Clarke comes down the wicket to Jayant Yadav and launches him for a maximum.

It's a second in consecutive overs off the spinner and underlines how comfortable Clarke and Ben Slater are looking.

Both are on for centuries and the partnership is up to 125.

  16. Rain stops play at the Ageas Bowlpublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 42-2 v Surrey 209

Some drizzle has arrived in West End and on comes the hover cover.

  17. wicket

WICKET Rossington c Procter b White 19published at 11:48 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 165-6

Needing five-an-over to try and reach 400 in time, Essex really needed Adam Rossington to fire.

But he's gone cheaply, pushing at Jack White and popping a catch up to mid-on.

Decent low catch from Luke Procter. Simon Harmer comes to the middle, Essex need a miracle.

  18. wicket

WICKET Denly lbw b Balderson 136published at 11:45 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 414-6 v Lancashire 327

Joe Denly's outstanding knock is brought to an end.

Finally a false shot as he plays around one from George Balderson and he is trapped in front.

But his first century of the summer may have got Kent over the line in their battle to avoid relegation.

for Joe Clarkepublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 144-2 v Middlesex 366

That is the way to bring up a half-century! A Caribbean-style flourish as Joe Clarke whips a lofted on-drive off Toby Roland-Jones for four.

He and Ben Slater are looking very nicely set for Notts and this is all very good news for Kent.
