I hope England get a win tonight because I would love the Ashes to still be alive going into the final four games.

They need a better powerplay tonight, it was their worst in 12 games in the opening T20.

The Australian milling around at the boundary's edge. Here come the umpires to lead us out. England openers Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley lift themselves from leaning on the advertising boarding and jog onto the field between various flame-spewing pillars.

A group of kids are giving the players a guard of honour to run through while waving some flags It's very cute - but they've gone a bit early and have now been waving them for about five minutes.

Got to credit the commitment but surely some arms are going to give way soon? The flags will be dragging along the floor by the time the players get through.

  4. What happened in the first T20?published at 17:55 British Summer Time 5 July 2023

There was a brief period of doubt for Australia before they secured their win in the first T20 at Edgbaston.

Chasing 154, Australia were cruising at 130-2 but lost three wickets for 10 runs as England fought back at the death.

Opener Beth Mooney finished unbeaten on 61 as Australia edged home with just one ball to spare.

England stuttered to 118-7 but were boosted by Amy Jones' unbeaten 40 from 21.

    England have to go game-by-game.

They know that Australia are beatable, they've got close.

They need to put pressure on at both ends, not just when Sophie Ecclestone is bowling.

Their bowling and fielding has been a little bit concerning. If they can improve on those areas they can beat Australia.

    It feels psychological for England.

They almost come up against Australia and see them as unbeatable.

There are players in the squad that shouldn't have the psychological barrier now and they have traded some words with Australia.

They need to get over that hurdle but I can't help feeling like Saturday was a very good opportunity.

So how do the England team assess their chances?

"We've seen weirder things happen than that in cricket," says spinner Sophie Ecclestone.

Perhaps, but maybe not all that many. You can read what she has to say here.

  8. What do England need to win the Ashes?published at 17:48 British Summer Time 5 July 2023

England need nine points to regain the Ashes, so must win all five remaining white-ball games - or win four if one is tied or rained off.

To do so would be a truly remarkable achievement, even on home territory. Australia are the current world champions in both the 50-over and 20-over formats. They also won the Commonwealth Games last year.

They have won 41 out of 42 one-day internationals in the last five years, and 57 out of 66 T20s.

England captain Heather Knight: "There is some disappointment at losing three in a row. I was going to bowl as well but I think it will be a pretty good cricket wicket.

"We've got a good crowd in and want to put on a show. We are just focused on one game at a time, we are really close and have competed really well. It is just those small moments."

On bringing in Charlie Dean for Freya Davies: "Nat is back bowling and we're hoping to get some overs out of her so it changes the balance of our team a little bit. Charlie Dean is a world-class player as well."

On whether she thought she'd ever reach 100 T20 internationals: "Probably not. T20 is probably the one I've had to work at and adapt my game for and evolve."

  11. Postpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 5 July 2023

Australia batter Alyssa Healy: "It looks a pretty decent wicket and we can't expect it to change.

"I hope there's a bit more pace than the first game but we're happy to have a bowl first.

'We've relaxed and chilled out and watched a pretty incredible Test match and then we've ran around at the pretty incredible Oval. We've been lucky to play at some great grounds on this tour. "

    Hello there.

After victory in the one-off Test and first T20, Australia are sitting pretty with six points in this multi-format Ashes series.

With two points available for each white-ball win and five games remaining, one more victory for Alyssa Healy's team will ensure that they cannot be overtaken and will retain the trophy they won on home soil early last year.

The series is on the line at The Oval. Will Heather Knight make changes to her line-up? We'll have the toss shortly...
