  1. Match abandonedpublished at 19:56 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

Sadly, on this occasion, I am not wrong. The match has officially been abandoned.

Given the state of the outfield, I can't say it is a surprise.

One point apiece for the Superchargers and the Phoenix.

Here are some of the best moments from the game for you to enjoy again.

There is movement at Headingley. The umbrellas are down certainly but it looks like it is still raining as the umpires wander out for a look.

If it is indeed still raining, I fear we may not be too far away from an abandonment.

    I hope I'm wrong. I often am.

  3. Davidson-Richards powers Superchargers to winpublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

The rain may be holding things up now a Headingley but we have managed to get one game in already and it was dominant by Alice Davidson-Richards.

The all-rounder took three wickets, two catches, a run out with a direct hit and hit the winning runs with a six as Northern Superchargers comprehensively beat Birmingham Phoenix.

Read Mike Peter's report from that one here.

If I tell you that the ground staff are handing around a packet of biscuits, that should let you know that any clear up isn't exactly imminent.

Given the size of the puddles on the outfield, I'd be surprised if it takes any less than an hour to make it playable which would mean time is running out...

We're hearing that we need to be back on by 21:08 BST for a 25-ball game.

Ah. We're just seeing some TV pictures of the outfield and the puddles are already looking rather large.

It's still raining pretty hard as well. This isn't ideal.

That rain caught just about everyone by surprise. It went from nothing to some of the heaviest rain we've seen all summer (and we've seen plenty of rain) in a matter of moments.

The hope is that it'll disappear just as quickly and the players can get back out there ASAP.

OK, now it really is raining quite hard. How disappointing.

No, seriously, this is a real deluge.

The ground staff are busy pushing groundsheets under the covers to prevent any water getting onto the pitch itself.

  9. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 62 balls

    Phoenix 84-5

Oh no... From nowhere, the heavens have opened and the covers are coming on.

From the quite heavy rain initially, it already looks that much lighter so hopefully just a brief delay.

  10. Not outpublished at 62 balls

It's a brilliant googly from Adil Rashid but Chris Benjamin was nowhere near it!

I'm not sure what Tom Banton heard. Not out.

  11. Superchargers reviewpublished at 62 balls

Tom Banton behind the stumps is convinced that Chris Benjamin has got an inside edge off Adil Rashid.

    Given not out but reviewed.

  12. Phoenix 83-5published at 60 balls

Matthew Short is the third Superchargers bowler to bowl 10 balls on the trot and does so very well.

Just two runs from his second set of five as Ben Duckett - playing something of a lone hand for the Phoenix - and Chris Benjamin try to regroup.

Jamie Smith had looked good and played some beautiful shots, but Adil Rashid ensured he didn't last long.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 55 balls

    Shadab c & b Short 0 (Phoenix 81-5)

Two in three balls for Matthew Short! Phoenix are wobbling here.

Shadab Khan gave himself plenty of room, tried to launch the ball back down the gorund but hit it straight up.

Short took a couple of paces backwards and steadied himself to take the catch. No mistake and the Superchargers will be delighted with how this is going.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 53 balls

    Mousley b Short 9 (Phoenix 81-4)

Down the track, misses and he's bowled!

Dan Mousley went for the big shot, the ball from Matthew Short didn't do much but it got through him and clattered into the timbers.

  16. Phoenix 80-3published at 52 balls

Top shot from Dan Mousley, the new batter for the Phoenix.

Not much width from Matthew Short but just enough for Mousley to chop it away fine. Four runs.

Here's the second wicket for the Northern Superchargers. Will Smeed caught off the bowling of Wayne Parnell...

  18. Phoenix 74-3published at 50 balls

Fantastic stuff from Adil Rashid. He's through 15 balls and has figures of 1-13 so far.

It might have been a couple more but sub fielder Bas de Leede slides to prevent a boundary from the last delivery of that 10-ball set.

  19. Phoenix 70-3published at 45 balls

After a successful five, Adil Rashid is going to continue for another five.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 44 balls

    Smith b Rashid 13 (Phoenix 69-3)

    Adil Rashid strikes!

It was an attempted sweep from Jamie Smith, the ball didn't really turn but he missed and it skidded on to hit off stump.

England's leg-spinner is showing why he's one of the best in the world.
