Welsh Fire captain Tammy Beaumont on BBC Two: "We did think about the weather but we think we're past the worst of it now. Batting second can suit you if it's weather-affected but we didn't want to dwell on that.

"So we think batting first will suit us, we've had success with it so far during the competition."

Batting first is often the best option in knockout cricket.

Getting runs on the board is a good way of getting ahead of the game and being able to put the chasing team under pressure.

One change for Welsh Fire with Emily Windsor coming in for Alex Hartley. It's a rebalancing of the Fire side, with Hayley Matthews available to bowl today they've gone for Windsor's greater batting power. Hartley, who is due to retire at the end of the tournament, will hope for a chance to play in the final.

Superchargers are unchanged from Tuesday's victory over Fire.

Northern Superchargers: Marie Kelly, Jemimah Rodrigues, Phoebe Litchfield, Hollie Armitage, Alice Davidson-Richards, Bess Heath, Georgia Wareham, Kate Cross, Leah Dobson, Lucy Higham, Grace Ballinger.

Welsh Fire: Tammy Beaumont, Sophia Dunkley, Hayley Matthews, Sarah Bryce, Laura Harris, Georgia Elwiss, Emily Windsor, Freya Davies, Alex Griffiths, Shabnim Ismail, Claire Nicholas.

  4. Welsh Fire the toss and batpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

Welsh Fire captain Tammy Beaumont has won the toss and chosen to bat.

Hollie Armitage says her Superchargers wanted a bowl anyway, so everyone's happy.

Her side's two defeats in this tournament have come when they've batted first.

Dare I say it, but we've now got a touch of sunshine at The Oval. And there's not a piece of plastic sheeting in sight.

    It's time for the toss.

Tammy spoke very openly when she was dropped from England's T20 side and she is at her best when she has got a point to prove.

The captaincy is really suiting her too, and I think she's enjoying that responsibility.

Shabnim Ismail is a fiery character. She loves to take the big wickets and get into a battle.

When she's on form, there is no one better to watch in the world.

The draft has made the women's competition a bit more even.

The Welsh Fire are flying, and Tammy Beaumont has been in incredible form.

But for Superchargers, it's their captain Hollie Armitage that has impressed me most. She's one of the only domestic captains in The Hundred and has managed her young team brilliantly.

It's a very even match-up but I think Welsh Fire will want to really prove a point after a poor couple of years before now.

Superchargers have now moved to the tennis balls and are played a reaction based catching game.

They shelled four catches in the Fire chase on Tuesday, so will want better outcomes in the field today.

    We'll have play!

A toss has been scheduled for 15:00 BST, with play due to start at 15:15.

We'll have a 95-ball game, with one ball shaved off the 25-ball powerplay. Four bowlers can have 20 balls, the fifth would be limited to 15.

Warm-up watch - Northern Superchargers are in a ring and are tapping around a football, while a few Welsh Fire players have been trying to keep a tennis ball in the air. Contrasting strategies.

The umpires are now out in the middle and the seats are beginning to fill up. There's a man dressed as WG Grace, which isn't very Hundred.

While we wait for the umpires to have a potter around The Oval, let's remind ourselves of when these two sides last met... which was only on Tuesday, in their final group game.

It was Northern Superchargers who emerged triumphant on that occasion as Marie Kelly's 69 helped them to 144-4.

Fire then lost captain Tammy Beaumont and star all-rounder Hayley Matthews before a run had been scored. Sophia Dunkley led a recovery, surviving multiple dropped catches, but the total proved too much for last season's bottom side, who finished on 128-8.

A bit of actual news from The Oval now - the rain has stopped and the umpires have scheduled an inspection for 14:30 BST.

On the plastic sheet watch - they're now being removed from the outer square.

And just like that, they're removing the plastic sheeting from one of the bowler's run-ups.

I am your plastic sheeting correspondent, should anyone touch a bit of tarpaulin in the E2 postcode today, I'll be on the case.

Yes, I'm sorry to say the start of the eliminator between Welsh Fire and Northern Superchargers in the women's competition has been delayed by the rain.

We were due to start at 14:30 BST, but we currently have plastic sheeting extending the entire width of The Oval pitch, so no chance of that.

Manchester Originals v Southern Brave in the men's competition is set to begin at 18:00, that too may be affected by the thundery conditions in the capital.

We're extending our hands out of windows and have our ears to the soggy outfield - when we know, you'll know.

A month of high intensity cricket all working towards one weekend. Eliminators Saturday, finals Sunday.

Two sets of teams squeezed off the top spot, desperate to assert their right to play in the final. An excited crowd filtering into The Oval. An expectant public watching at home...

...will have to wait a bit as it's raining in South London.
