  1. dropped catch

Barresi dropped on 0published at 1 over

    Ned 0-0

Just obvious signs of England being way, way short of where they should be. First, the captain isn't strong enough to prevent a review he knows isn't out, then Jos Buttler fails to move to an edge that probably should be his. Even if it's not Buttler's, Joe Root should be taking it at first slip. Poor.

  2. Not outpublished at 0.4 overs

    Ned 0-0

That's quite poor, actually. It was Woakes and first slip Joe Root pushing for the review, but Buttler is the man who knows best. Barresi was nowhere near it.

Root is determined Barresi edged it. He was absolutely convinced. Stokes and Buttler less so but they do review.

  4. England reviewpublished at 0.4 overs

    Ned 0-0

Really not sure about this. Woakes thinks there's an edge. Buttler doesn't, but the skipper still goes for the review.

  5. How's stat?!published at 12:54 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2023

Netherlands have only scored more than 315 once in the second innings of an ODI match. That was a score of 374-9 against West Indies in June, resulting in a tie. Netherlands won that match via a super over.

Wesley Barresi, at 39 the oldest man in the tournament, is opening for the Dutch alongside Max O'Dowd. Chris Woakes, after making some runs, has the ball. Two slips.

    Thanks, Callum.

He's a proper man of the people, Callum. I bet his lunch will be a pasty or sausage roll. Points collected on the app. Maybe a meal deal.

Time for me to go and get some lunch.

Here's Stephan Shemilt to take you through the first part of the Netherlands' chase of 340.

First change to make with the ODI team in my opinion would be to pick the squad from players who impress in the One-Day Cup (eg Harry Swindells). No exceptions. If Stokes, Buttler, Root, etc want to play ODIs, they have to play in the One-Day Cup.

Dawid Malan played really nicely for his 87 at the top of the order before being run out after confusion with Ben Stokes.

Malan may be one of few England players to leave this tournament with some credit.

Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali also fell in tame fashion.

Buttler's form in this tournament will be a real concern for England. He made 43 and 20 in England's first two games and then has a high-score of 15.

The problem is the nature of the wickets too. They are often incredibly soft.

Jonny Bairstow's, Joe Root's and Harry Brook's wickets today certainly were.

If we take out the series against Ireland when none of these players featured, then yes it is a major issue for England.

They were bowled out once in South Africa and lost seven wickets twice in January. It was the same record in Bangladesh in March.

Against New Zealand in September they were bowled out once and in the other three games lost nine, seven and six wickets.

In this World Cup they've been bowled out five times and lost nine wickets in the other three games.

It is hard to win games if you lose that many wickets.

Is it just me, or have England been completely all-out or very nearly all-out (8/9 wickets down) in every ODI innings this year?

Ben Stokes will get a lot of the plaudits for England's total of 339-9 but Chris Woakes' innings was really important.

He came to the crease with England 192-6 but made a really good 51 off 45 balls in a stand of 129 with Stokes.

That has hauled England to a total that they really should defend.

  18. 'Stokes got us away from trouble'published at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2023

England opening batter Dawid Malan: "I think we're always trying to take the aggressive option. I got a few half volleys early on which was nice. Netherlands did well to restrict us for a period but Ben Stokes batted really well."

Did you worry when England fell from 133-1 to 192-6?: "I thought oh no, not again, but thankfully Stokes got us away from it."

How important was Ben Stokes' innings?: "He was able to soak up the pressure when needed and then able to transfer the pressure when needed. To be able to do that consistently throughout your career is a great trait."

Enough runs on the board?:" I hope so, I think we would've taken 340, especially this deep into the tournament."

Stephen Jones: It’s obviously come far too late but as an England fan, it’s nice to see a little bit of fight in this side & of course Ben Stokes hitting a WC century by belting it around the park. Won’t count for much but it does show that at least they all haven’t given up!

Ben Stokes is a little bit special, isn't he?

We may not get many more days like this so enjoy them.
