Kohli's knock was the perfect foil for Shreyas Iyer, who was happy to let the main man soak in the attention before launching into an assault of his own.

He was eventually out for 105 from 70 balls, including eight astonishing sixes.

From the moment India lost their first wicket, it became all about Kohli.

He steadily anchored India's innings, reaching a record 50th ODI century in the process and beating the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record.

The noise and the crowd reaction speaks for itself. A special occasion.

India batter Virat Kohli: "This all feels like a dream, honestly. It's too good to be true. It feels surreal. I never thought I'd be here ever in my career. Just to help the team so many times. Again a big game today and I played the role I have throughout the tournament so that the guys around me could express themselves. I am glad things came together so nicely and we could put a good total on the board.

"As I said before a lot of times, for me the most important thing is helping the team to win. Whatever it takes to do that, I am ready to do that. Running singles, running doubles, hitting boundaries. Whatever the team wants me to do.

"I have been given a role for this tournament and I am doing that to the best of my abilities, dig deep, bat long. So the others can play around me. I am having that confidence of going into the late overs where I can dominate as well. That's the only key to consistency, I guess. Playing the situation for the team at all times."

Rohit Sharma started the fun before his departure for 47 left Shubman Gill in charge.

The opener was in sublime form before retiring hurt on 79. He came back for the last over and remained unbeaten on 80.

When recapping an innings of 397-4, one thing you are guaranteed to see is plenty of sixes.

India's 397-4 is the highest score in a men's 50-over World Cup knockout match.

The previous record was New Zealand's 393-6 against West Indies in the 2015 quarter-finals.

India were pretty much faultless there. That was outstanding. New Zealand had no answers.

Back-to-back fours for KL Rahul wraps up the innings, and also brings up Tim Southee's century (one that he won't be celebrating, unlike Kohli and Shreyas).

So after all that, New Zealand need 398 to win for a place in the World Cup final.

    No pressure.

A single to Gill and KL Rahul smashes the next ball down the ground for six.

Both Glenn Phillips and Mitch Santner try and get the catch but it's miles over their heads, so instead they just have a hug (after an almost-collision), because why not?

He had one job to get India up to 400 but that little shift of momentum will give New Zealand some hope.

If you get new batters in it's very difficult to get going. Will this be the over that gives New Zealand something to cling to?

    Suryakumar c Phillips b Southee 1 (Ind 382-4)

Is this the over that changes the game?

    I mean, it's unlikely.

He was only going to try and whack sixes, fairly, but picks out Glenn Phillips at square leg.

And opener Shubman Gill, who retired hurt on 79, comes in with five balls to go!

  13. Ind 382-3published at 49 overs

Suryakumar Yadav is in for one over.

He can't do that much damage. Can he?

It was a slower cutter from Trent Boult. It's crazy that Suryakumar Yadav is only coming out now. New Zealand are under the pump going into the second innings.

  15. wicket

    Shreyas c Mitchell b Boult 105 (Ind 381-3)

15 off the first four balls of the over, then out. Classic.

Shreyas Iyer's fun comes to an end, a stunning 105 from just 70 balls - and the small matter of eight sixes in there too.

Barely a celebration from Boult. New Zealand just want to get off the field.

  16. Ind 376-2published at 48.2 overs

    Slashed past point for four.

    Bowling is fun, isn't it?

  17. 6 runs

    That is massive.

Trent Boult watches the first ball of his over sail 104 metres into the stands.

As an Indian I would not want to celebrate just yet. If NZ keep hold of the wickets in PP, this has potential of an absolute run fest thriller. Watch out for Rachin and Mitchell.

Something tells me the crowd enjoyed that innings.

Two overs left. How chaotic can it get?
