Australia captain Pat Cummins: "We saved our best for last and a couple of big-match players stood up and we're pretty chuffed."

On the toss: "We were tossing it up. We've been batting first for most of the tournament but we thought tonight was a good chase night because it felt it might a little bit easier and everyone was pretty keen to get out there."

On the pitch: "It was a little slower than I thought. It didn't particularly spin as much as we thought either but I thought everyone adjusted well and bowled some tight lines."

On his own bowling and the fielding: "There was some variable bounce so we thought a couple of catches on the leg side. We were desperate in the field, I thought it all started against South Africa last week. The boys were fantastic. We've got ageing squad but we are still throwing ourselves around. We were really chuffed with 240 because we were happy with anything under 300. We thought 300 might be tough but achievable on that wicket."

Pat Cummins receives the World Cup trophy from India prime minister Narendra Modi.

It's quite a hurried presentation to say the least. Cummins is left standing by himself with trophy in hand, looking rather confused, while he waits for his team-mates to be instructed to come up and join him.

They eventually get there and celebrate together with a roar of delight, trophy aloft, and pure elation.

  5. 'Not good enough today but I'm really proud of the team'published at 16:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

India captain Rohit Sharma: "The result has not gone our way, we know that.

"We were not good enough today but I'm really proud of the team and how we played from game one. We tried everything we could from our side but it wasn't supposed to be."

On what a par total would have been: "Honestly, 20 or 30 more would have been good. We spoke when KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were batting and they were putting on a good partnership.

"They needed to bat for as long as possible, we were looking at 270 or 280 but then we kept losing wickets. We couldn't get a partnership together and that is exactly what Australia did to win the game, they stitched a good partnership after they lost three wickets."

On getting three early wickets: "That was the plan. When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets as early as possible and we did that.

"But credit to those two guys in the middle, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, they stitched a big partnership together and put us completely out of the game. We tried everything we could but the wicket got slightly better to bat on under the lights."

On the pitch: "We knew under the lights it would be slightly better but I don't want to give that as an excuse.

"We didn't bat well enough to put enough runs on the board. Then with the seamers we got three quick wickets and we thought another wicket there would open up the game for us.

"Credit to those guys in the middle for that big partnership."

    The medals are being presented.

India's players are understandably looking glum but politely accept theirs, while Virat Kohli tries to look upbeat about his player of the tournament trophy.

Perhaps the most endearing thing is when the younger Australia players - Cameron Green the most evident - are so starstruck by shaking Sachin Tendulkar's hand.

We'll hear from Pat Cummins and Rohit Sharma next.

It’s a sorry scene now from an India perspective. Some have stayed for the presentation. Most have not.

I suspect player of the tournament was quite straightforward too.

He didn't get what he wanted most. But Virat Kohli finished with an incredible 765 runs, at an average of 95.62.

  10. 'You can't write a script to top the winter we’ve had'published at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc: “Pat Cummins was phenomenal, I think he’s been phenomenal all tournament with his decision making. At times he’s had to step up with the ball and when it’s been a bit flat, he’s been phenomenal.

"That’s just capped off an unbelievable eight weeks for his team. I have no words.

“Between Pat and all our coaches, it’s been an incredible winter. I don’t think you can write a script to top the winter we’ve had.

"To win a World Cup in India, it’s been a fantastic eight weeks. It’s been tough but gee whizz it has been successful and enjoyable.”

Everything, from start to finish, that Australia did was outstanding.

They were truly outstanding in the field again. Australia were just on top from that moment that Travis Head caught Rohit Sharma and they never let India off the hook. There were barely any boundaries scored.

They threw themselves round the field and that is a good insight into what they are like as a team. It just sets the tone. They hung in there and them stemmed the flow.

    2021 World T20 champions.

    2023 World Test champions.

    2023 World 50-over champions.

    Not bad, that.

It really wasn't a contest in the end. From around 100 to win it was always just when Australia would win.

Cricket is very lucky to have India and this part of the world. They are absolutely obsessed with the game. There aren't many sports who have the backing of billions and billions supporting the game. It has been absolutely huge here.

They will just question why they couldn't produce what they've been producing in a final. Whether it was mentality or they weren't brave enough. Only they will know but that will be their biggest regret.

There's a drone show going on now.

It's displaying the India flag in the sky, which is a little awkward.

And there aren't many people left in the stadium to actually see it.

  16. 'A lot better than sitting on the couch at home'published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

Player of the match Travis Head: "Not in a million years did I think that would happen [being man of the match today and in the World Test Championship final]. What an amazing day. I'm just thrilled to be a part of it.

"It is a lot better than being sat on the couch at home! I'm very lucky that everything went well and I was able to get back and the support that the boys showed, I didn't think this would happen. I was nervous in the first 20 balls but Marnus [Labuschagne] batted brilliantly and it is great to bat with him. It was an amazing partnership.

"I felt the way that Mitch Marsh came on and took the game on, he set the tone. We knew the wicket might get tough but it turned out to be a great decision to bowl first because the pitch did get better as the day went on. What we did at the toss paid dividends. Nice to be a part of it and play a role. It will be a good few days now.

"Rohit Sharma was probably the unluckiest man in the world! I do work hard on my catching but I couldn't imagine holding onto that. It is a nice thing I'll be able to look back on later in my life."

At 47-3, it was back in India's favour. The crowd roar was back, Virat Kohli took the first catch, Steve Smith should've reviewed his lbw.

But Travis Head was still there. And that was all they needed.

It is the most incredible World Cup victory that I've seen. To do against this India side, who are a great team, against the odds and against the pitch, which was for the hosts, but this Australia side and their tactical time they got it right.

Strategically they are a very clever team. They've clearly got a very clever thinktank. I don't think they are a 320 side, they are a 280 side and preparing a pitch like this gave Australia a chance.

They did exactly what Pat Cummins said they would, they've silenced the crowd. They've done it in great fashion. I don't know anyone who thought the game would be done in 43 overs with Australia coasting to the target.

But there's just something about Australia and World Cups.

They just win them. It's in their DNA.

Pat Cummins' decision to bowl first left a few in disbelief. India looked delighted with it and at 76-1, it looked even more baffling.

It looked to be heading the same way as every other comfortable India victory that we've seen in the past seven weeks.
