Romario Shepherd gets the breakthrough for West Indies with a smart piece of bowling.

It's just back of a length from Shepherd and Phil Salt plays down the wrong line and sees the ball clatter into his stumps.

While the numbers do not paint a great picture of Buttler's captaincy in 50-over cricket so far, the same cannot be said in T20 cricket.

As captain in T20 cricket, Buttler has an improved average, win percentage, toss conversion percentage, strike-rate, handling success, stumping success and a 100% catching success rate.

From a numbers perspective, Buttler's time so far as an ODI captain have not been to the benefit of the team or his own game, with the bat or with the gloves. However, his numbers show that he makes a very good T20 captain, helped by the T20 World Cup trophy already in his trophy cabinet.

Romario Shepherd attempts to bounce Phil Salt but it sits up on the pitch and says 'hit me'. Salt duly obliges as he pulls it through mid-wicket for four.

A single later in the over from Will Jacks brings England up to 50. Salt and Jacks punch gloves.

Jos Buttler has scored at a slower rate and got out more often in ODIs as captain

Buttler has an ODI career strike rate of 117.02. When not captaining England, it has averaged out at 121.37, whereas when captain, it is as low as 104.97.

In his ODI career, Buttler has finished his innings not out 17.11% of the time, rising to 19.82% when not playing as captain.

Since taking the captaincy full-time, Buttler's rate of innings not out dramatically drops to 8.33%. That is despite not being out as a stand-in captain in 22.22% of his innings.

Will Jacks responds with a couple more decisive boundaries off Alzarri Joseph later in the over.

The first is a heave into the stands for six across the line, before a thwack through point for four.

The runs are coming easily for England at the moment.

  6. Eng 32-0published at 4.2 overs

A vicious short-pitched delivery from Alzarri Joseph has Will Jacks swaying out of the way as he's done for pace, and it clips the edge of the bat to fly over the wicketkeeper and race away for four.

"You need a step ladder to play those," Sir Viv Richards says on commentary.

    Jacks puffs his cheeks.

When keeping without the captaincy in ODIs, Buttler has a catch success rate of 90.2%, a handling success rate of 99% and a stumping success rate of 96.3%.

When keeping as captain in ODIs, Buttler has an identical handling success rate and a fractionally higher catch success rate of 91.8%, his stumping success rate dramatically drops to 72.7%.

  8. Eng 27-0published at 4 overs

Romario Shepherd, gold chain around his neck swinging from side to side as he runs in to bowl, bangs it in short and Will Jacks takes on the hook shot.

Shai Hope offers a half-hearted appeal thinking there might be some glove or bat on it. But he's not convinced enough to seek out a review.

Shepherd's pace with his final delivery of the over brings a leading edge from Jacks' bat but it falls safe.

In ODI cricket, Buttler has a career batting average of 39.39. Again, like his win percentage, that is higher when not batting as captain, averaging 40.68.

When batting as captain, Buttler only averages 35.78, dropping to 32.46 since he replaced Morgan permanently as white-ball captain.

In the nine games Buttler captained prior to Morgan's retirement, he averaged 48.14 with the bat.

A let-off for Will Jacks as he drives at a wide one from Alzarri Joseph at the start of the over and edges.

The ball flies beyond a diving first slip and races away for four. In true captaincy style, Shai Hope responds by putting in a second slip.

Phil Salt carves the final ball of Joseph's over through point to end the over as it started - with four runs.

Jos Buttler has not been able to make the most of winning matches as captain when winning the toss (which he did again today) and in fact, he has so far been more likely to win a match when being on the losing end of the toss.

When winning the toss, Buttler has only won 22.22% of matches, compared to 25% defeats when winning the toss.

When losing the toss, Buttler's leadership has led to a 25% victory rate, losing 27.78% of matches after losing the toss.

In ODI cricket, Jos Buttler has won 53.63% of the matches he has played in the format for England. That win percentage jumps up to 56.33% when Buttler has played not as captain.

When under his leadership, England's win percentage has dropped to 43.24%, falling to 35.71% since replacing Morgan permanently.

In the nine games Buttler captained prior to fully replacing Morgan, England did have a win rate of 66.67%, but of course, that team was still under an environment set by Morgan.

  14. Tale of Buttler's captaincypublished at 20:54 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

Jos Buttler is captaining England for the 38th time in ODI cricket today and the 29th time since replacing Eoin Morgan as England captain in white-ball cricket.

We have done some digging into the numbers behind Buttler's rein so far and how both he and England have fared under his leadership, both in ODI and T20 formats.

For West Indies, it was a mixed tale.

They slipped to 24-4 through a combination of poor shots and good bowling from Curran and Gus Atkinson.

But a stand of 129 between the classy Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford started to shift things.

However, when both fell in the space of three overs for 68 and 63 respectively, England roared back. They slipped from 152-4 to 163-7 before eventually slumping to 202 all out.
