Given there is only one player (Buttler) who played in the 2019 final, it's safe to assume that this is absolutely a rebuild. Some serious youth, class and potential in this group - I'd not blink just yet!

  2. Eng 147-7published at 29 overs

Liam Livingstone knew he had to show some aggression but really he needed to bat through this innings.

Sam Curran is joined by Rehan Ahmed and the latter gets off the mark in style by driving fellow leg-spinner Yannic Cariah through the covers for four. Classy shot.

Has frustration got the better of Liam Livingstone here? Another quite soft dismissal, in all honesty.

The Lancashire batter advances to Romario Shepherd, who digs one into the pitch, and Livingstone can only tamely slap it into the air.

Sherfane Rutherford takes a handy catch on the move at mid-on.

  4. Eng 142-7published at 27.4 overs

A bit of the yes-no interlude from England's batters gives West Indies a chance of a run-out.

Liam Livingstone dabs Romario Shepherd into the off side, sets off, but then changes his mind. Sam Curran has to turn on his heels and dive to make his ground. But the throw misses the stumps anyway.

Anyone who plays cricket knows that some days, risky singles become run-outs, edges happen, unlikely catches are taken, but it's how a team reacts that matters. It's great to see some fight.

  7. Eng 140-6published at 27 overs

If England can get themselves to 200, or even 220, then we'll have a game on here based on that stat.

Yannic Cariah, shaven headed with beard, continues to to tempt and tease England's batters with his leg-breaks.

A single each for Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran.

  8. How's stat?!published at 21:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

The average score batting first in ODIs in Barbados is 227, but in the last two years it is 200.

  9. Eng 138-6published at 26 overs

Romario Shepherd, named after the great Brazilian striker those of you who were with us for the second ODI will recall, grew up in a football-mad part of Guyana. He's not much of a footballer, though, by his own admission.

Liam Livingstone wafts at a wide one from the West Indies seamer and is lucky to not to get a feather on it.

I once bowled Ben Duckett with part time off-spin in schoolboy cricket. He had made a chanceless double hundred at the time but no-one remembers that…

    Duckett c King b Shepherd 71 (Eng 137-6)

Romario Shepherd breaks a crucial partnership, but it's a soft dismissal.

It's back of a length from the seamer and Ben Duckett tamely flicks it to straight into the hands of Brandon King at short mid-wicket.

Did that hold in the pitch a little? Duckett certainly played for a little more bounce.

    Eng 137-5published at 25 overs

England content to milk Yannic Cariah's leg-spin for five balls until Liam Livingstone cuts loose to the final ball of the over.

The England batter slog-sweeps Cariah to the fence where Romario Shepherd attempts to take the ball above his head but he is unable to quite get a hand on it.

Ben Duckett would be high on the list of the English game’s most improved cricketers in the last, say, five years.

  14. Eng 128-5published at 24 overs

Salt in the wound for Alzarri Joseph as Liam Livingstone guides it cleverly down to the vacant third region for four.

Liam Livingstone with a questionable shot.

He flamboyantly dances down the wicket to Alzarri Joseph and skies one out to Keacy Carty at deep mid-wicket, but he spills a routine chance.

Did that swirl in the wind, perhaps?

Jambarrel: Ben Duckett should be opening. He can play a long innings, he can blast in the first 10 AND he can sweep and nurdle in the middle.

Ben Duckett is a fine sweeper. Franco Baresi class.

He gets hold of the fifth ball of Gudakesh Motie's over with one of his favoured shots but can only pick out the boundary rider so has to settle for a single.

  18. How's stat?!published at 21:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

All of Ben Duckett's ODI 50s for England have come away from home. His previous two were both against Bangladesh. Duckett did, of course, make an unbeaten century in an abandoned ODI against Ireland in September.

  19. 6 runs

    Eng 118-5published at 22 overs

Liam Livingstone gets in on the act, heaving Alzarri Joseph over cow corner for six more!

  20. 6 runs

    Eng 111-5published at 21.2 overs

Ben Duckett is upping the ante against Alzarri Joseph. He's offered a freebie down the leg side from the West Indies quick and gets enough bat on it

Duckett follows it up with a pull over mid-wicket for four.
